Automation Engineer – West Greenwich, RI

We are looking for an Automation Engineer to join our West Greenwich, Rhode Island team. Supporting our Outsourcing Services Provider (OSP) model, PACIV engineers work directly with our pharmaceutical client to execute and maintain automation and validation tasks. Design, test, and troubleshoot PLC-controlled processes and GMP utility systems producing both clinical and commercial bulk drug substances. Collaborating with the client’s Utilities, Maintenance, Process Engineering, and Automation teams, ensuring seamless support.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead Automation Projects - Oversee design, programming, implementation, and testing of control systems in regulated environments.
  • Support Capital and Modernization Efforts - Contribute to new PLC installations, testing, and upgrades as part of capital projects.
  • Provide Technical Support - Deliver hands-on troubleshooting and maintenance for utility systems supporting automated manufacturing.
  • Resolve Control System Issues - Participate in root cause analysis, incident investigations, and control system troubleshooting.
  • Drive Process Improvements - Implement updates and continuous improvement initiatives for automated and stand-alone control systems.
  • Manage System Administration - Handle user access control, conduct GMP reviews, and perform data integrity and security assessments.
  • Lead System Upgrades and Remediation - Coordinate remediation, migration, and upgrades of existing control systems.
  • Maintain Engineering Documentation - Update design specifications, SOPs, standards, drawings, and other technical documents.
Qualifications:
  • Education & Industry Experience - Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field, with experience in GMP-regulated environments across life sciences, pharmaceuticals, or medical devices.
  • Automation & Control Systems Expertise - Proficient in Allen Bradley (CompactLogix, ControlLogix), GE Proficy, Siemens controllers, and JCI Metasys for BMS/CMS and utility systems; skilled in PLC programming and HMI design using platforms like FactoryTalk View, iFix, and WonderWare.
  • Technical & Network Knowledge - Strong understanding of industrial protocols (TCP/IP, Ethernet, Profibus, DeviceNet) and ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, line diagrams, and P&IDs.
  • Compliance & Development Standards - Familiar with control system standards, SDLC methodologies, and regulatory frameworks including 21 CFR Part 11, GAMP, and GDP.
  • Operational Readiness & Soft Skills - Comfortable with 24/7 manufacturing support and rotational on-call duties; thrives in high-pressure environments, takes initiative, and collaborates within cross-functional teams.
  • Communication & Organizational Strengths - Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and presentation skills; organized with strong computer literacy, Microsoft Office Suite and Project.
  • Travel Requirements: Up to 10% travel for training sessions, industry conferences, and meetings with vendors or suppliers
