Job Description

The Engineer-Of-The-Watch (EOW) is responsible for overseeing the maintenance on the riverboat and keeping the riverboat in compliance with USCG /ABSC regulations year round, completing quarterly inspections during the shift.  The EOW should be professional at all times and possess good communication skills.  The EOW must have Boyd Style while providing outstanding and legendary guest service. 

  • Adheres to and enforces compliance will all standards/regulations established by Louisiana State Police Gaming Division, OSHA, USCG, ABS Consulting and other federal, state, and local agencies having jurisdiction over riverboat gaming and permanently-moored craft in Louisiana while adhering to the policies and procedures set forth by this property
  • During the shift carries out the riverboat’s preventive maintenance plan. Maintains all equipment onboard the riverboat at a level commiserate with a premier gaming operation by completing scheduled inspections and assigned preventive maintenance tasks. Tracks status of inspections and tasks through completion.
  • Performs projects, maintenance/repair tasks, and cleaning duties in ways that minimize the impact to guest service.
  • Handles routine administration during the shift: Keeps required logs up-to-date; Prepares requests, check items received and otherwise manages the inventory of engineering parts, supplies, and consumables.
  • Maintains awareness of operations in/around the riverboat through direct observation. 
  • Makes several rounds during the shift that checks the condition of the riverboat’s machinery and equipment, the material condition and general housekeeping in the riverboat below the main deck and in machinery and fan spaces above the main deck.  When observed or informed, takes prompt action to remedy undesirable conditions.
  • Participates in scheduled training and drills.
  • Coordinates own activities with the EIC and the shift’s COW.
  • Coordinates activities of Riverboat Technicians assigned engineering tasks on the shift.
  • Assists EIC in overseeing contract work to ensure timely completion and fulfillment of company expectations.
  • Assists the EIC in maintaining the riverboat’s engineering manuals, procedures, records, and logs.
  • Assists the EIC in making preparations for the environmentally-safe transfer of bulk oil to and waste oil from the riverboat.
  • Assists the EIC in making preparations for the hygienic and environmentally-safe transfer of sewage and other wastes from the riverboat.
  • Assists the EIC in training Riverboat Technicians.
  • Quickly perform/oversee several tasks in response to emergency situations including, but not limited to: securing power to the scene of an emergency, securing dampers and ventilation, closing watertight doors, cutting off fuel to machinery, starting fire pumps, fighting incipient fires with a handheld extinguisher, activating installed fire suppression systems, switching electrical power from shore to ship’s service.
  • During the shift is responsible for overseeing the maintenance of the riverboat machinery and all equipment and necessary repairs
  • During the shift handles all scheduled/unscheduled maintenance
  • Trains and evaluates Emergency Squad Team Members on fire pumps, fuel shut offs, sprinkler system and fixed CO2 systems
  • May be required to perform duties outside of normal job description where in the Company’s judgment it is necessary in the interest of efficiency, productivity, or improved customer service
Qualifications

  • Must have a High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must pass a chemical dependency test as required and work in a drug free environment.
  • Required Experience: Must have five or more years of experience working under the EIC on this riverboat and/or equivalent marine experience.
  • Equivalent marine experience may include, but is not limited to:
  • (a) current or previously credentialed mariner having a QMED rating as long as the expired document is not older than ten years and was not revoked or suspended,
  • (b) qualified as a non-documented Oiler under the requirements of the U. S. Coast Guard prior to the Coast Guard transferring inspections to the State of Louisiana,
  • (c) previous qualified watch stander and supervisor of technicians aboard government or military vessels that was less than ten years ago, or
  • (d) Previous engineer of an uninspected vessel that was less than ten years ago.
  • Equivalent marine experience for items (c) and (d) must show knowledge of vessel systems comparable to those aboard the riverboat, team management, and general recordkeeping/administration, including inspecting for shipboard material condition and good housekeeping.  References or other proof of successful completion of duties will be required.
  • Must have taken basic firefighting taught by local Fire Department
