Summary Statement
The City of Boise is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to lead the design, implementation, and optimization of our enterprise cloud and data center infrastructure. In this strategic role, you'll architect and manage Microsoft Azure, Office 365, VMware, and on-premises systems that support essential city operations.

Essential Functions
Coordinates day-to-day work, delegates tasks, and sets deadlines for the assigned team; provides guidance, direction and support for training and reviews work; ensures effective collaboration with other teams; and listens to team members' input, provides feedback and resolves any issues or conflicts.
Designs, implements and maintains secure and scalable cloud and on-premises infrastructure to support organizational needs. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to ensure system reliability, performance and security, while also automating processes and managing system monitoring and incident response. Oversees and ensures management of virtualized environments, support for cloud migrations, maintenance of infrastructure-as-code, and provision of technical expertise for troubleshooting and optimization.
Creates design specifications; orders, installs, configures and maintains VMware server virtualization software systems citywide. Installs and configures VMware ESX/vSphere Enterprise virtualization software. Designs, installs and configures physical or virtual servers into the existing infrastructure. Inspects all hardware equipment and storage devices to ensure they are properly maintained with up-to-date firmware and security patches.
Partners with city departments in the planning, analysis and implementation of new virtual server and/or cloud projects and to identify service needs, resource requirements and problem areas. Maintains, oversees and troubleshoots virtual infrastructure to resolve hardware and software failures, network outages and security breaches and increase overall performance. Serves as a project and technical lead on matters related to network design, implementation and interconnection with other computing environments.
Performs planning, needs analysis, purchases, installation and configuration of various parts of data-center hardware. Designs strategic plans for implementing new or enhanced services for new sites and upgrades to existing locations. Designs, configures and oversees data backup systems. Performs rotation cycles of backup jobs and performs offsite rotation for disaster recovery. Oversees the backup system for virtual environments and data restoration from the city's backup systems. Verifies daily backups for most of the city's data-center locations and provides training to other Information Technology (IT) personnel on using the backup management application.
Designs the processes for and performs the installation, configuration, oversight and maintenance of the city's network servers and underlying directory services. Installs and configures Microsoft Windows server software and maintains and oversees the Microsoft Active Directory, Entra, and Azure environments. Designs and oversees the city's Office 365 tenant, including Entra, Exchange, Sharepoint, Teams and OneDrive Oversees the restoration and recovery of e-mail when required. Designs, administers, and supports Windows file services, DNS, DHCP, and authentication.
Researches and stays abreast of new technologies and trends through industry publications, online technical and training seminars and local and out-of-state conferences and training sessions. Strategically analyzes new technologies to find better solutions for the city's IT operations. Meets with vendors to discuss future plans and products. Creates and updates technical documentation on existing systems in the city for the benefit of the IT Department.

Requirements
Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science or a related field and seven years of progressively responsible experience providing IT network support, of which at least five years were spent managing a large data center environment, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Knowledge of: cloud infrastructure principles, including compute, storage, networking and security, with hands-on experience deploying and managing services in platforms like AWS, Azure or GCP; HCI, and VMware ESX/ESXi virtualization software; enterprise backup software; Windows server operating system software; Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems for data centers.
Ability to: design, manage and maintain a secure and reliable data backup system; order, track, receive, install and configure infrastructure hardware; lead a team through citywide projects to implement various systems in support of the city's strategic IT plan; manage complex projects; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.
Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Five years of experience in managing data center and/or cloud operations.
Experience with designing, deploying, and managing scalable cloud infrastructure in AWS, Azure, or GCP environments.
VMware VCP certification.
Microsoft certifications in either on-premises servers, or cloud infrastructure and administration.
Licensing And Other Requirements
Valid state-issued driver's license.
