Position Title: Kubernetes Engineer
Location: Austin, TX - Hybrid (Onsite 3 days/week)
Position Status: 1+ year contract
Position Description:
Our client is looking for Kubernetes Systems Engineer to manage, maintain, and enhance our self-hosted Kubernetes environments. This role is ideal for a hands-on engineer with a deep understanding of Kubernetes internals and a passion for building reliable, scalable, and secure container infrastructure. You'll work closely with development, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to ensure robust performance and operational excellence across our clusters.
Key Responsibilities: Deploy, maintain, and scale on-prem Kubernetes clusters (e.g., Kubeadm, RKE). Troubleshoot issues across containers, pods, nodes, storage, and networking. Collaborate with development teams to improve deployment stability and runtime performance. Develop automation tools, operators, and scripts to streamline cluster operations. Monitor and optimize cluster performance, health, and resource usage. Author and maintain Helm charts, Kubernetes manifests, and CI/CD pipelines. Stay up to date with the Kubernetes ecosystem and recommend enhancements. Document infrastructure, configurations, procedures, and best practices.
Required Qualifications: Hands-on experience with on-prem Kubernetes management (e.g., kubeadm, RKE). Strong understanding of container runtimes like Docker and containerd. Proficiency in Linux systems, networking, and storage infrastructure. Experience with monitoring stacks such as Prometheus and Grafana. Familiarity with CI/CD tools: GitLab CI, Jenkins, ArgoCD, FluxCD, etc. Proficient in writing Helm charts, Kustomize, or similar templating tools. Strong debugging and troubleshooting capabilities across infrastructure and application layers. Scripting skills in Bash, Python, or Go.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with service mesh technologies (e.g., Istio, Linkerd) and ingress controllers (NGINX, Traefik). Familiarity with GitOps and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles. Knowledge of Kubernetes security best practices (RBAC, PodSecurityPolicies, NetworkPolicies). Exposure to high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) configurations in Kubernetes environments.
