Lead Power Electronics Development Engineer Job Summary
A global leader in advanced energy and automation systems is seeking a Lead Power Electronics Development Engineer to support the design and development of high-efficiency power conversion technologies across marine, industrial, oil & gas, and defense sectors. This role involves designing both hardware and software elements of power electronic converters and control systems, enabling precise and reliable operation in demanding environments—including those with vibration, moisture, or arc flash risk.
If you're driven to push the boundaries of low, medium, and high-voltage converter performance (up to 98%+ efficiency), and you thrive in technically complex, mission-critical applications, this is a prime opportunity to contribute to next-generation power systems.
Lead Power Electronics Development Engineer Responsibilities Design and simulate complete power electronics systems for high-demand applications such as marine propulsion, energy generation, metals processing, and oil & gas
Specify and select electrical components including filters, transformers, capacitors, inductors, power cables, and converters
Develop detailed documentation, including hardware specifications, commissioning guides, and test procedures
Design modern converter systems such as voltage source inverters (IGBT or SiC) and thyristor-based rectifiers (LCIs)
Support system-level testing, validation, and field deployment of drive systems
Build and validate real-time and offline electrical system simulations to guide system design and performance tuning
Draft specifications for controller logic and commissioning modes for converter systems
Develop control software for drive systems and their interfaces (including HMIs), and validate using test benches or Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation platforms
Create and maintain in-house engineering tools that assist project execution and commissioning efforts
Collaborate closely with the commissioning and test teams throughout deployment and post-installation phases
Lead Power Electronics Development Engineer Position Requirements Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or Power Electronics with at least 2 years of experience
OR Master’s degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
OR Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 7 years of experience working with medium- or high-voltage power electronics converters
Lead Power Electronics Development Engineer Preferred Position Requirements
Deep understanding of electrical principles and physical system behaviors; strong theoretical and mathematical foundation
Experience designing systems for medium- and high-voltage environments
Familiarity with technologies such as MMC (Modular Multilevel Converters), multilevel VSI, LCI, DC drives, and cycloconverters
Knowledge of variable speed drives, active filtering, or reactive power systems (e.g., STATCOM)
Demonstrated ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and work collaboratively within cross-functional engineering teams
Self-directed, adaptable, and eager to coach or mentor peers
Willingness to travel occasionally to support testing or commissioning phases
