About the Role:
We are seeking a seasoned Linux Engineer to assist in standing up and optimizing a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) server for a customer experiencing significant performance issues. This remote, short-term engagement involves addressing and resolving latency during write operations over NFS and SMB shares , where performance is currently 2–3x slower than comparable Windows systems. The customer is looking for immediate support from a highly capable professional who can take ownership and navigate a complex technical environment.
What You Will Be Doing: Stand up and configure a new RHEL server to align with enterprise-grade best practices. Investigate and troubleshoot performance bottlenecks related to NFS and SMB share writes , with a focus on latency reduction . Perform deep system diagnostics and I/O performance analysis to identify causes of throughput degradation. Collaborate with customer stakeholders to design and test solutions that align RHEL performance with or above Windows equivalents. Document findings, recommendations, and remediation steps clearly and concisely. Provide expert-level remote support and calmly guide the customer through issue resolution in a time-sensitive setting. What We Want To See: Demonstrated expertise in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) setup and optimization. Solid experience troubleshooting I/O latency and performance issues in Linux environments. Strong understanding of NFS (v3/v4) and SMB (Samba) protocol behavior and tuning. Familiarity with comparative benchmarking between Linux and Windows systems. Ability to work independently and communicate complex technical findings to stakeholders clearly. Adaptable and calm under pressure, especially when supporting customers with limited internal expertise. Technologies Used in This Role: Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) NFS, SMB (Samba) I/O performance tuning tools (e.g., iostat, vmstat, fio, nfsstat) Remote access tools (e.g., SSH) Bonus Points For: Experience in consulting engagements or customer support environments with similar troubleshooting scope. Knowledge of Linux kernel tuning for file system and network stack optimization. Familiarity with storage architectures and mounting configurations in enterprise environments.
