What You Will Do This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. Detonator Production (DP) Division is the premier Production Agency (PA) assigned to produce War Reserve (WR) detonators for the Nation's nuclear stockpile security mission. The Division is part of LANL's Weapons Production Directorate (ALDWP). DP is comprised of a team of motivated, highly skilled technical and operational support staff working in an integrated format. The organization is centered on high-rigor manufacturing operations to produce precision, safe and reliable WR products. DP partners closely with customers and stakeholders such as NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration), Design Agencies (LANL, Sandia, and Livermore), and LANL program management orgs to deliver on challenging National security objectives. DP upholds vigorous teamwork, personal integrity, respectful workplace, and continuous improvement in operations, technical excellence, safety and security. DP is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to support the Production Planning & Control Group (DP-5). The Manufacturing Engineer will report to the DP-5 Group Leader supporting improvement initiatives around production planning, metric development, business workflow standardization and integrating cross-functional activities to ensure timely delivery of the highest quality detonation products and services to our customers. DP-5's scope within the DP enterprise includes: Production planning and control to meet customer milestones and deliverables, ensuring work authorization is effectively integrated across the Division to meet production commitments. Producing efficient manufacturing floor schedules and monitoring production metrics to ensure performance. Collaboration across the Detonator Production Enterprise facilitating communication and integrating planning activities including production programmatic work across multiple programs, research and development activities, and facility and equipment maintenance requirements. R&D Engineer 2 ($104,100-$172,200) As an R&D Engineer 2, you will work closely with the production planning staff to analyze, collect, and establish required data in support of business metric development. Responsibilities will include metric reporting and development, continuous improvement project support, defining standard work and best practices around production planning, and partnering across the Division to improve operational excellence. Additional activities and projects may include piloting process and manufacturing systems improvements. In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will be responsible for leading projects of larger scope and impact based on your additional years of experience. What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Engineering Experience Experience working with manufacturing processes, production planning and/or lean manufacturing principles.
Working knowledge applying engineering practices and principles supporting capability and procedural development within a manufacturing environment.
Project Management: Experience in project management for technical or operational work, including the development of project plans, managing scope, schedule, and budget
Ability to manage ambiguous or conflicting priorities across multiple projects and meeting deadlines.
Communication and Teamwork Strong writing ability and verbal communication skills required to independently prepare and present data and reports to peers, senior colleagues, management, and customers.
Demonstrated record of dependability, reliability, and commitment to the long-term needs of the job duties and programmatic goals of the organization.
Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3: Advanced working knowledge and experience supporting the manufacture of products that meet the technical and quality standards set forth on the product definition through the application of engineering practices and principles.
Demonstrated ability to lead the development of standardized work procedures, by collaborating with cross-functional subject matter experts (SME's).
Demonstrated ability to manage projects of advanced scope and complexity.
Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 2 : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Education/Experience at R&D Engineer 3 : Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred. Desired Qualifications: Industry experience using an MRP and/or MES software within a manufacturing environment to document, plan and control manufacturing processes.
Experience supporting the deployment of new manufacturing software and/or data migration across systems.
Formal certifications in Lean/Six Sigma methodologies and/or demonstratable experience applying the tools and concepts.
Experience with materials or processes having radioactive, toxic, pyrophoric, explosive, and/or other health, safety or security hazards.
