Mechatronics Engineer

New Today

At Toyota Research Institute (TRI), we’re on a mission to improve the quality of human life. We’re developing new tools and capabilities to amplify the human experience. To lead this transformative shift in mobility, we’ve built a world-class team in Automated Driving, Energy & Materials, Human-Centered AI, Human Interactive Driving, Large Behavior Models, and Robotics. In the Human Interactive Driving team, we are looking to build the future of intelligent vehicles that center the human experience. We do this by simultaneously working to understand human learning, while also pushing the limits of what can be achieved with autonomous control. Then, we bring the two elements together in a shared autonomy framework, amplifying human potential. This role would be part of a new “Mobility ” project that strives to bridge the gap between pure research and new product development. We will work closely with partners in Japan to rapidly prototype novel applications of state-of-the-art technology (including, of course, AI) to different types and scales of vehicles (including very small). Responsibilities
Work with mechanical, electronic, and software engineers to design and build prototype vehicles of different sizes. Analyze the dynamics of a proposed system, then design and write novel software algorithms for closed-loop control of subcomponents. Design electronic + mechanical integration for Electrical/Electronic architectures from subcomponent size up to whole vehicles, including platform software development. Design, build, assemble, write software for, and test integrated mechatronics teststands. Design mechanical components, and shepherd them to be manufactured by external contractors. Travel occasionally to engage in testing of experimental vehicles, including to California and Japan. Qualifications
MS in robotics/mechanical engineer/electrical engineering/related field + 2-4 years of experience, or equivalent. Must have experience with real physical dynamic systems ( robots, autonomous vehicles, drones, etc.), and be comfortable working on both hardware/software. Must have experience with mechanical design and fabrication. Must have experience with software development for mechatronics control applications, preferably in embedded settings, and with compiled systems languages ( C/C++/Rust). Bonus Qualifications
Experience with prototype vehicle design and manufacturing. Experience with ROS2. Experience with firmware development.
