The Plant Engineer I acts as system owner and subject matter expert (SME) for assigned area(s) to include but not limited to infrastructure, utilities, and process equipment. He/ She will ensure that the assigned systems are in a state of operational readiness by ensuring that preventive maintenance is carried out on time and in full, any issues are documented and investigated, corrective and preventive actions are implemented. He/ She provides technical expertise to maintain and continuously improve assigned areas to improve reliability, reduce downtime, minimize costs and ensure technical means for safe and high-quality operation.
GENERAL PURPOSE: (A brief statement indicating the reason for the existence of this position).
The Process and Plant Engineering department supports the three business of Evonik Corporation in Birmingham Alabama, PDS Services, PDS Products, and MDS (Medical Devices). Plant Engineering is designated system owner for infrastructure, utilities and/or GMP process equipment. Plant Engineering ensures that the GMP systems (infrastructure, utilities and equipment) are always a state of operational readiness and comply with EHS and Quality requirements specified in relevant regulations, Evonik's standards, policies and procedures.
The Plant Engineer I acts as system owner and subject matter expert (SME) for assigned area(s) to include but not limited to infrastructure, utilities, and process equipment. He/ She will ensure that the assigned systems are in a state of operational readiness by ensuring that preventive maintenance is carried out on time and in full, any issues are documented and investigated, corrective and preventive actions are implemented. He/ She provides technical expertise to maintain and continuously improve assigned areas to improve reliability, reduce downtime, minimize costs and ensure technical means for safe and high-quality operation.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work independently or as a member of cross functional teams to represent plant engineering function to support projects and operational readiness of assigned systems.
- Identify and champion projects to support site's continuous improvement, cost control and any compliance gap remediation initiatives.
- Creates system specific training or general training to enhance knowledge of operations team use systems as per OEM recommendations and internal procedures.
- Designated system owner and SME for systems in assigned are related to infrastructure, utilities, and/or GMP process equipment.
- Ensure that systems are always is a state of operational readiness and comply with EHS and Quality requirements specified in relevant regulations, Evonik's standards, policies, and procedures.
- Ensure that preventive maintenance is carried out on time and in full, any issues are documented and investigated, corrective and preventive actions are implemented.
- Provide technical expertise to maintain and continuously improve assigned areas to improve reliability, reduce downtime, minimize costs, and ensure technical means for safe and high-quality operation.
- Work with Reliability Engineering to identify critical spare parts required for systems in assigned area. Monitor health of systems and proactively identify and implement measures to ensure maximum uptime of systems.
- Work with Project Engineering to create budget estimates, develop business cases and secure capital funds to implement projects to support systems uptime, increase reliability, safety and compliance, and correct systems issues.
- Create and maintain life cycle documentation such as URS, system classification, system risk assessment, EAF (CMMS entry) and work with site Process Engineering and Validation teams to qualify and validate the systems.
- Maintain the qualified or validated state of systems as appropriate.
- Work with maintenance to ensure that work orders associated with routine calibration, preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance and ESH are appropriately prioritized and completed.
- Responsible for initiating and completing change controls, investigating deviations, and implementing CAPA actions for the assigned areas.
- Ensure that Pharmaceutical Standards and cGxP' regulations and ICH guidelines are integrated into assigned projects as appropriate.
- Actively participate in identifying and resolving safety issues. Lead or participate in Safety risk assessments (PHA) and Quality Risk Assessments (QRA) for new process designs and process changes.
- Lead or participate in deviation investigations using RCA tools. Support implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Using TrackWise, support management of Deviations, Change Controls and CAPAs.
- Support internal and external compliance audits.
- Author and review SOPs.
REQUIREMENTS:
- BS/MS in an engineering field including but not limited to Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Chemical, or Biomedical Engineering with a 1-3 years of experience in plant engineering function with sufficiently demonstrated level of performance and capability in the maintaining systems (infrastructure, utilities, or process equipment) in state of operational readiness.
- A demonstrated ability to do the following for engineering activities of an appropriate scope and complexity:
- Understand technical details of design, operation, and troubleshooting systems related to infrastructure, utilities, and/or process equipment.
- Examples of systems may be semi or filly automated fill lines (liquid and/or powder), autoclaves, Depyrogenation ovens/ tunnels, HVAC, cold storage chambers, containment and aseptic isolators, tanks, pumps, TFF, shakers, filter driers etc.
- Examples of utilities may be clean steam, WFI, Nitrogen, instrument/ process air, chilled water, hot water etc.
- Communicates and escalates issues related to systems failures, downtime, deviations etc. to line management, site leadership, and process owners as appropriate.
- Knowledge of the use of personal protective equipment and safety protocols and practices related to working with or exposure to hazardous chemicals that could potentially affect the health of the employee.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to clearly and effectively communicate observations, results, and outcomes to more senior technical staff.
- A general understanding and application of relevant engineering principles, and methods; familiarity or general working knowledge of other related technical fields and applications.
- Experience in managing smaller engineering projects as it relates to plant engineering activities through the conceptual, basic, and detailed engineering design phases.
- Excellent written, verbal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to interact and communicate effectively with senior staff, at internal company meetings, and with clients on technical aspects of experiments and research programs.
- Conduct activities with consideration of budget, time schedules, and overall project goals and objectives.
