About the Job:
The Principal Building Envelope Engineer is a senior-level expert responsible for leading the design, evaluation, investigation, and consulting on the performance of building envelope systems. This role combines technical leadership, client management, and project oversight for a wide range of new and existing construction projects. The principal will collaborate closely with architects, contractors, and internal teams to ensure high-performance and code-compliant exterior enclosure systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Serve as the technical lead on complex projects related to building envelope performance, including roofs, walls, fenestration, waterproofing, and air/moisture barriers.
Manage and oversee forensic investigations of envelope failures, moisture intrusion, and construction defects.
Ability to Conduct field assessments, testing, and condition surveys of building envelope components.
Prepare and review technical reports, repair recommendations, specifications, and construction documents.
Provide peer review services for envelope design on new construction projects.
Lead project teams and mentor junior engineers and technicians.
Coordinate and communicate with clients, design professionals, and contractors.
Ensure all deliverables meet company standards and industry codes such as ASTM, AAMA, NFPA, and local building codes.
Lead business development efforts by cultivating client relationships and identifying new opportunities.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related field; master’s .
Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required; NCEES record a plus.
10+ years of relevant experience in building envelope consulting, design, or forensic engineering.
Ability to communicate with building owners, engineers and contractors.
Understanding of materials performance, weatherproofing systems, construction assemblies, and industry codes.
Strong analytical, communication, and report-writing skills.
Knowledge of diagnostic tools (e.g., infrared thermography, water testing, moisture meters).
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Work Environment:
Combination of office, laboratory, and field settings.
Travel to project sites and client meetings as required (local and regional).
Certifications:
Registered Roof Consultant (RRC) or Building Envelope Commissioning (BECxP)
Certified Building Enclosure Commissioning Professional (CBECxP)
AAMA or ABAA accreditations
