Principal Software Engineer - Research Systems Location:

Boston, MA - 1 day per week (Hybrid) About the Company A Boston-based global investment management firm specializing in quantitative strategies is seeking a Principal Software Engineer - Research Systems. The engineering function leverages data, advanced analytics, and cutting-edge technology to deliver high-performance investment solutions. The Role We're looking for a seasoned software engineer to join the research technology group in a senior technical capacity. You’ll play a central role in designing and delivering robust platforms that support quantitative research and portfolio simulation efforts. This is a high-impact position that combines strategic architecture, hands-on engineering, and leadership responsibilities. What You’ll Be Doing Architect and evolve core systems supporting research, backtesting, and forecasting tools. Build and enhance features that align with strategic priorities across research and engineering. Mentor team members through code reviews, technical discussions, and collaborative development. Drive engineering best practices, ensuring quality through test automation, peer review, and resilience-focused design. Collaborate on technical planning and decision-making related to performance, scalability, and security. Contribute to the development of a robust compute and data platform optimized for quantitative workflows. Evaluate emerging technologies to support data-intensive and HPC use cases. What We’re Looking For A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical discipline. 10+ years of experience building production-grade software systems, ideally with a focus on availability, scale, and performance. Proven success deploying cloud-native applications, particularly in AWS environments. Deep knowledge of container and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, Helm). Hands-on experience with data tools and frameworks such as Spark, Trino, Polars/Pandas, Iceberg, or similar. Understanding of distributed computing paradigms and workflow orchestration (e.g., Airflow, Dask, AWS Batch, Slurm, Prefect).
