We are seeking a well-rounded R&D Engineer with both mechanical systems knowledge and software/control systems experience to support the development, deployment, and optimization of our proprietary systems. This individual will play a pivotal role as a key contributor to MyLand's regenerative agriculture units through hardware redesign, control system optimization, field support, and internal IT coordination.
This role bridges the physical and digital aspects of our technology and will be integral in scaling our platform across operational, R&D, and field environments.
This position is based in our Phoenix office.
Position Summary
This role is for an experienced engineer responsible for supporting and improving the design, integration, and performance of automated systems at MyLand. The Engineer will apply expertise in mechanical systems, instrumentation, and software integration to enhance system performance and reliability.
The successful candidate will thrive in a collaborative environment, work closely with multidisciplinary teams, and lead engineering projects from concept to implementation and ensure proper technical documentation is well built and maintained.
Responsibilities Rapidly learn the design and function of MyLand's proprietary units and contribute to ongoing innovation and iteration. Design, develop, and support automation systems, including mechanical, electrical, and control subsystems. Lead the development and maintenance of applications and related interfaces. Lead or support redesigns of mechanical and electrical systems to improve performance, manufacturability, and serviceability. Work with Ignition (SCADA) software to monitor, control, and adjust system functionality; develop interfaces and alerts as needed. Configure, program, and troubleshoot Phoenix Contact PLCs and relay systems. Maintain and improve control system security and networking infrastructure Maintain engineering documentation, including CAD models, schematics, and BOMs. Evaluate and select equipment using technical datasheets and functional criteria to ensure cost-effective and high-performance solutions. Lead or support the Engineering Change Order (ECO) process to ensure traceability of improvements and updates. Collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality, and Field Ops teams to streamline implementation of design and system changes Collaborate with algae, operations, and production teams to ensure engineering solutions support product and research goals. Provide regional support (~10% travel) for commissioning, troubleshooting, and system upgrades in the field. Requirements
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience (minimum 5+ years) in industrial automation or systems integration. 3+ years of experience in product development, R&D, or field-based engineering. Proficiency with Phoenix Contact PLCs and relays. Strong Knowledge of environmental sensors, fluid handling, or water systems. Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Ethernet/IP, OPC-UA, etc.). Strong documentation and organizational skills to maintain system records, libraries, and SOPs. Effective cross-functional communication skills, and ability to lead technical problem-solving efforts.
Preferred Qualifications Experience in agricultural or biological systems. Familiarity with Python, SQL, or light scripting for automation or data reporting (not core to the role). Ignition Certification (or significant experience with Ignition SCADA platforms). Proficiency in PLC programming Experience with networking hardware, including firewall configuration, VPNs, and VLANs. CAD or 2D mechanical drawing experience (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
