Position Summary:
The Senior Mechanical Engineer is a key technical leader responsible for planning, managing, and executing complex engineering projects related to plant operations, maintenance, and improvements. This role involves developing detailed reports, long- and short-term work plans, and providing data-driven recommendations that align with budgetary and operational goals. The engineer leads the design and implementation of plant modifications, evaluates performance data, and proposes system upgrades based on root cause analysis and predictive maintenance insights. Responsibilities include overseeing project timelines, managing contractors and staff, coordinating equipment specifications, and ensuring compliance with industry standards, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements.
This position also plays a vital role in mentoring junior engineers and providing technical guidance to cross-functional teams. The engineer acts as a technical liaison in meetings with stakeholders, including vendors, contractors, members, and utilities. With a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, power plant systems, and cooperative business practices, the Senior Mechanical Engineer demonstrates sound judgment, advanced problem-solving skills, and a continuous improvement mindset. A Professional Engineering license in Kentucky is preferred, along with at least seven years of progressive engineering experience in plant operations and maintenance.
Job Function:
Develops and finalizes reports and work plans that recommend actions, considering short- and long-range objectives, as well as economic and budget considerations.
Develops and coordinates departmental project work plans and manages them through completion, taking corrective action as needed. Informs the supervisor and manager of any major developments or changes in project direction.
Leads the development of work plans and monitors progress on applicable portions, taking corrective action as required.
Completes status reports for all work assignments and keeps management informed of progress.
Serves as a technical representative in meetings with the public, members, vendors, contractors, and other utilities.
Successfully manages complex assignments on a routine basis.
Trains and develops less experienced engineers.
Provides work direction to other staff and contractors on assigned projects.
Manages multiple assignments and mentors other staff members.
Analyzes data and makes recommendations and/or decisions.
Maintains and approves technical records (e.g., drawings, files, databases).
Oversees and/or completes the preparation of estimates (cost, work orders, schedules).
Possesses thorough knowledge of all relevant procedures, specifications, and applicable codes, regulations, compliance rules, and standards (e.g., RUS).
Collaborates with other team members and supervisors in completing assignments.
Demonstrates a thorough understanding of how decision-making and work products impact other systems, operations, and processes.
Provides engineering assistance for Member Cooperatives.
Creates corporate standards and specifications related to their area of expertise.
Applies mature engineering knowledge and sound judgment consistent with engineering practices and standards.
Demonstrates strong technical expertise and awareness of the job-related field and remains current on industry developments.
Performs all work in a safe and timely manner.
Leads the analysis of test data, operating data, and practices; recommends plant improvements based on these analyses.
Leads the design of plant improvements in accordance with sound engineering practices.
Leads the preparation of equipment and construction specifications, evaluation of bids, and recommendation of bidders.
Leads the coordination of contractors or staff on project-related work, certifies completed work, and recommends final acceptance of projects.
Oversees project monitoring during startup and recommends modifications necessary for project success.
Leads efforts to improve plant functionality and increase efficiency.
Leads planning, testing, data collection, and evaluation of plant performance. Evaluates test results and recommends improvements.
Leads the accumulation, analysis, and preparation of reports concerning industry operations, laws, and regulations.
Collaborates with others to provide engineering services for planning and coordinating equipment specification reviews and system interrelationships for all planned generating facilities.
Develops and maintains equipment/system maintenance strategy documentation.
Develops and analyzes condition-based and predictive maintenance programs.
Serves as a key contributor to the daily O&M Work Management Process and the Outage Management Team.
Leads corrective action reviews and root cause analysis processes to prevent future occurrences.
Performs all engineering-related duties with a continuous improvement mindset.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is preferred. All engineering degrees must be from an ABET-accredited program. A Professional Engineering license in the Commonwealth of Kentucky is preferred.
A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible engineering experience is required.
Qualifications:

Knowledge of power plant operation and maintenance procedures is required.
Technical expertise in power plant equipment, central station chemical systems, and thermodynamic processes.
Understanding of contract procedures is required.
Demonstrated ability to make responsible decisions regarding contract execution.
Ability to read, interpret, and prepare system and equipment manuals, schematic diagrams, and engineering drawings.
Ability to think both logically and creatively, understand complex instructions, and develop sound engineering solutions.
Must be able to plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering work.
