Position Overview:
We're looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to work on the hardware development of our drone platform. You'll handle the full product life cycle, designing systems that need to perform reliably in complex, mission-critical scenarios and overseeing the process of taking those systems into production, all while working in a fast-paced startup environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Cross-functional collaboration: Work with a rapidly growing team of engineers to integrate mechanical designs with our electronics and drone platforms
- End-to-end ownership: Take mechanical designs from concept to batch production to assembly and testing
- Mechanical design: Design enclosures, mounting systems, and other components for lightweight and vibration resistance
- Thermal design: Optimize the design of electronic enclosures for heat transfer and cooling, and develop test plans for thermal validation. Provide guidance to the electrical engineering team on component selection and placement
- Prototyping: Develop and test prototypes for new components
Qualifications:
- Education & Experience:
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- 5+ years of experience in mechanical design
- Experience with thermal design and CFM for cooling electronics
- Experience designing for PCB and other electrical integration
- Experience taking a product through the production process
- Experience with design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA)
- Skills & Competencies:
- Material selection, especially plastics, carbon fiber composites, and metals
- Familiarity with manufacturing techniques, especially 3D printing, plastic injection molding, and metal stamping
- Proficiency with 3D CAD software such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Good organizational skills
- Nice to Have:
- 7+ years of experience in mechanical design
- Experience designing for aerospace and especially UAV/UAS
- Proficiency with thermal simulation and analysis software such as Ansys Icepak
- Experience designing for dust and water ingress protection
- Experience working with supply chain partners
- Experience designing for vibration resistance
