Senior Solution Engineer, Health Tech Products
New Today
Job Description
Salary Range: $120,000.00 - $170,000.00
At Leap Orbit, we are passionate about transforming healthcare through innovative technology solutions. We specialize in developing cutting-edge software that enhances healthcare data interoperability, streamlines workflows, and improves patient outcomes. As a fast-growing, dynamic company, we value collaboration, creativity, and a commitment to making a real impact in the industry.
We are currently looking for an experienced Senior Solution Engineer for our Health Technology Products division. The Senior Solution Engineer, Health Tech Products, will serve as a pivotal technical lead, demonstrating a client-obsessed approach to designing and delivering complex health tech solutions. This role is for an architect who defines the strategy, but who also possesses the deep development expertise to guide and contribute to its hands-on implementation. You will architect and guide sophisticated systems, such as fully managed, HIPAA-compliant de-identification services, while providing direct technical leadership to engineering teams.
This position requires deep familiarity with modern cloud-native infrastructure and deployment, including AWS (specifically EKS with Karpenter), Docker, and CI/CD pipelines. A core focus will be on healthcare data exchange standards, including the architecture of solutions using HAPI FHIR for ingesting US Core bundles. You will be instrumental in designing systems that apply Privacy-Preserving Record Linkage (PPRL) and other de-identification techniques, and you will be expected to leverage AI-empowered software development tools and processes to accelerate delivery and enhance code quality.
Reporting to the Federal Practice Director, you will be a key contributor to our mission of advancing health tech. This role fosters a "yes, we can build it" attitude, where you leverage your experience to provide practical advice and actively participate in building solutions that exceed client expectations.
Essential Functions
- Architect and lead the implementation of microservices-based healthcare interoperability solutions on AWS EKS, orchestrated via Karpenter and deployed via CI/CD pipelines.
- Design and oversee the development of services that support data de-identification, such as a Key Escrow Agent for PPRL-style hashing, salting, and pseudonym generation.
- Serve as the technical subject matter expert on client projects for the FHIR R4 $deidentify operation, showing eager engagement with client challenges and goals.
- Develop strategies for and guide the implementation of configurable, consistent date-shifting algorithms that preserve the relative intervals within a patient’s record.
- Integrate and reuse existing translation pipelines to convert de-identified FHIR resources into HL7 v2 to support downstream systems.
- Design solutions that support both streaming and bulk data processing workflows, managing real-time data ingestion and large-scale Bulk FHIR export jobs.
- Leverage AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Amazon CodeWhisperer) to improve development velocity and code quality.
- Ensure solution outputs conform to US Core profiles, with PHI removed or masked in compliance with HIPAA and USCDI standards.
- Implement and enforce security patterns, including OAuth2/SMART-on-FHIR authorization for all FHIR endpoints.
- Conduct thorough design and code reviews, ensuring adherence to best practices, coding standards, and cost-efficient, scalable architecture.
- Create and maintain clear technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, API documentation, deployment guides, and operational runbooks.
- Proactively identify and resolve technical risks, effectively communicating complex concepts and solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Behavioral and Technical Competencies
- Exceptional solution architecture skills and the hands-on ability to implement those designs.
- A client-obsessed mindset with a proven ability to understand and solve complex customer challenges through eager engagement.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to collaborate with clinical informaticians, data governance, and infrastructure teams.
- Deep understanding of software development principles, cloud-native deployments, and microservice architecture.
- Proficiency in relevant programming languages (Java required) and frameworks (HAPI FHIR required).
- Expertise in cloud infrastructure (AWS EKS, Karpenter) and healthcare data standards (FHIR, HL7v2).
- "Yes, we can build it" attitude and willingness to go the extra mile.
Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary role, involving prolonged periods of computer use. Finger dexterity is required for keyboarding. Extended periods of time reading/viewing computer screens.
Required Education and Experience
- Demonstrated experience in delivering healthcare technology solutions.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum seven (7) years of professional software development experience, with a focus on server-side Java development.
- Proven experience serving as a technical lead on client-facing projects with responsibility for solution architecture and guiding the engineering team.
- Deep experience with server-side FHIR development using HAPI FHIR framework.
- Demonstrated experience implementing FHIR R4 Bulk Data Access workflows.
- Experience with design and deployment of production-level Java microservices on AWS EKS.
- Thorough knowledge of PPRL concepts (salting, hashing, protected key escrow) and de-identification techniques, including consistent pseudonym generation and date-shifting.
- Proficient in Kubernetes (EKS), Docker, CI/CD, and cloud-native deployments on AWS.
- Solid grasp of OAuth2 and SMART-on-FHIR security patterns.
- Strong understanding of HIPAA privacy regulations, USCDI, and US Core profiles.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Experience utilizing AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Amazon CodeWhisperer) in a professional environment.
- Experience with message queuing technologies (e.g., Kafka, SQS) for streaming data ingestion.
- Familiarity with PPRL implementation frameworks or related FHIR Implementation Guides.
- Experience with FHIR to HL7 v2 translation pipelines.
- Cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Certified Kubernetes Application Developer).
- Experience working in strategic technology consulting.
