Rapidly growing Saab Inc. Land Systems division is seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer responsible for development, implementation, and support to Saab’s defense products, specifically mechanical and cross-disciplined integrated systems and subsystems, as well as Transfer of Technology (ToT) efforts. The successful candidate will be a member of the Land Systems mechanical engineering team, working on various programs and projects, occasionally on multiple efforts at the same time. The Engineer will collaborate with other engineering disciplines, program management, chief engineer, and other functions to accomplish the assigned tasks. Travel is required, mainly domestic and some international. Currently the position is remote home office; relocation will be required to Detroit, MI area within 2025.
Responsibilities include:
Understand, develop, and present technical concepts of product design and performance.
Provide analysis, design, and oversight of mechanical components and electromechanical assemblies.
Perform functional analysis, evaluation, and optimization of product designs. Provide relevant technical expertise.
Interface with engineering functions as well as other business functions to develop, define, and implement customer requirements through the design.
Provide technical interface and direction to key subcontractors and suppliers.
Provide mechanical engineering insights to manufacturing and production.
Perform and oversee design verification efforts.
Contribute to cost/benefit trade-off analysis and feasibility studies.
Contribute to mechanical related failure analysis of hardware.
Create and manage bills of material (BOM) within Saab’s Product Data Management (PDM) system.
Responsible for work package labor estimates and status reports.
Maintain communications with engineering program management regarding project progress and roadblocks.
Support product lifecycle management from concept through implementation.
Support mentoring and engineering staff development.
Compensation Range: $112,900- $146,800
The compensation range provided is a general guideline. Skills and Experience:
Required Experience and Skills:
Minimum Bachelor of Science/Arts in Engineering and 15 years of experience in related field, or equivalent combination of advanced degree and experience.
Working, hands-on knowledge of industry standard mechanical engineering design tools (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Creo, Ansys, ICEPAK, Mechanica, ANSYS, etc.)
Significant product development background demonstrating a strong engineering aptitude and good problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to resolve issues during design, development and execution of mechanical engineering activities.
Strong interpersonal and group communication skills, including remote.
Proficiency with MS Office software applications.
Earned Value (EV) skills, including Cost Account Manager (CAM) activities.
Working experience with industry engineering standards (including ANSI Y14.5), processes, procedures, requirements, tools, and practices.
Able to lead teams of up to 5 mechanical engineers on a given project.
Ability to work with limited/general direction.
U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain DoD Secret clearance (existing clearance a plus).
International and domestic travel is required, up to 20%.
Desired Experience and Skills:
Prior DoD industry experience, specifically weapon systems experience.
Familiarity with DoD and NATO Standards.
Experience working in a model-based systems engineering environment.
