What You'll Do
You'll join the AvaTax engineering team responsible for a globally distributed, high-throughput tax compliance platform that processes billions of transactions across multi-cloud infrastructure. Our systems are performance-critical, fault-tolerant, and designed to scale - supporting complex tax rules and content from over 190 countries.
We're building the future of tax automation where AI is not a side project - it's at the core of everything we deliver, from intelligent APIs to self-healing systems. You'll help architect, scale, and improve services that must be fast and integrated with AI-powered capabilities. You will report to a Senior Manager in Software Engineering.
This is a hybrid opportunity out of the Durham, NC area. #LI-Hybrid.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be
You will develop high-scale backend services that power our globally distributed AvaTax platform, processing millions of transactions daily across a multi-cloud architecture. AI is embedded in everything we build - from intelligent decisioning and anomaly detection to content enrichment and developer workflows - and you'll integrate AI-first thinking into all aspects of your work. Using C#, .NET, Kubernetes, SQL, and modern DevOps practices, you'll contribute to the next generation of performant and observable services. You'll work with engineers, product managers, and data scientists to ship impactful features, improve existing systems, and evolve a platform built for scale and intelligence. What You'll Need to be Successful Minimum of 3 years of experience developing backend software using C# or similar object-oriented language Hands-on experience with REST APIs, microservices, and relational databases such as SQL Server or PostgreSQL Exposure to AI/ML technologies or projects, including prompt engineering, data processing, or integrating LLM APIs Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and version control tools like GitLab or GitHub You enjoy working on scoped tasks while collaborating with team members across departments You excel in documenting solutions and participating in team discussions
