About the role
As Specialist Engineer you’ll lead technical strategy and provide expert guidance on connection and engineering processes, with a strong focus on shaping and implementing Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) frameworks across the National Electricity Market (NEM).
In this pivotal role, you’ll collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders – including internal planning and operations experts, government bodies, generation developers, OEMs, and NSPs to align diverse interests and deliver practical and tangible outcomes. Your ability to design and lead effective consultation and engagement processes will be key to securing stakeholder buy in and navigating competing priorities.
You’ll also coordinate closely with the other AEMO teams and industry initiatives, such as Connections Reform Initiative, Access Standards Review, and Engineering Framework, to ensure REZ frameworks are seamlessly integrated and actionable. Acting as the critical technical bridge between Connections Engineering, Operations, Planning, and external partners, you’ll help turn strategic frameworks into real world solutions that support the future of Australia’s energy system. What you will be doing Drive the technical development of Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) frameworks, ensuring alignment with government policy objectives and AEMO’s operational, planning, and connection engineering responsibilities. This includes proactively identifying and escalating key risks to AEMO management, particularly those related to potential unintended consequences of National Electricity Rules (NER) derogations.
Providing expert advice and guidance to internal staff and industry stakeholders in relation to technical, operational, regulatory and process matters associated with connections of major plant to ensure seamless transition of REZ frameworks from development to implementation by BAU teams. This includes considerations of training frameworks and provisions required to enable a mindset shift and approach of connections assessments that are contemporary and are enabled by REZ frameworks.
Lead a step-change improvement in AEMO’s collaboration with clients and the energy industry to ensure proactive, constructive and outcome-focused problem solving, as well as robust, transparent decision making.
Coordinate initiatives and reforms to enable transformation of ways of working of Connections Engineering Functions as a result of learnings via REZ frameworks development and CRI opportunities to enable considerations of future state considerations of network and connections risks that need to be accounted for.
Proactively build AEMO’s reputation as a trusted partner to generation developers, original equipment manufacturers, Government, Network Service Providers, Market Participants, Customers and other stakeholders. What you will bring to the role Qualifications in engineering, stakeholder engagement, or project management are highly regarded, with additional expertise in connections engineering processes or regulatory and policy frameworks considered advantageous.
Extensive demonstrated connections engineering and process technical experience on medium to large scale generation projects.
Experience in facilitating working groups and negotiating the resolution of technically complex issues across internal and external stakeholders with competing objectives and a variety of commercial and reputational drivers
Detailed understanding of the NER, the NEM, and the Rule change framework.
