: D&K Engineering (a Burke Porter Group company) is looking for an experienced Senior Controls Engineer to join their Rancho Bernardo location. The Senior Controls Engineer designs, develops, and tests control systems, including for shipboard and maritime equipment. Develops and implements software for industrial controllers and HMIs. Interfaces with clients to gather and document system and component requirements. Collaborates with other D&K engineers and suppliers to ensure that control systems meet project requirements. Performs commissioning and testing, troubleshooting, and repair of control systems. Creates and maintains control systems documentation. Essential Functions: Creates reliable, elegant control system architecture and designs. Solves complex problems in a manner that meets program needs (technical, schedule, budget, reliability, etc.) Develops PLC and other industrial controllers’ software. Integrates technical requirements within program constraints to create high quality system solutions. Interfaces and coordinates with other engineering disciplines - EE, ME, Systems. Discusses challenges with manager and client, and generates architectural roadmaps. Gathers, defines, and documents product and user interface requirements and objectives. Performs feasibility studies. Performs design reviews in accordance with project and company standards. Investigates and evaluates appropriate technologies, both open source and private domain, to achieve product objectives. Assists in developing production test and validation requirements. Assists in the transition of product designs from R&D into Manufacturing. Outlines and generates high quality technical status updates and reports suitable for client. Engages freely and with authority during internal and client-facing technical meetings. Performs other duties as required. Experience and Skills:
Experience and Skills: Education & Experience: Requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in engineering. Minimum of 7 years’ experience in machinery control software design, software testing, analysis, and technical documentation updates and 4 years’ specific experience in developing Ladder Logic software for multi-axis control systems. U.S. citizenship is required. Job Complexity: Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Networks with key contacts outside own area of expertise. Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Strong understanding of PLC/Microcontroller software development. Familiarity with multiple code languages, such as Ladder Logic (Allen-Bradley ControlLogix), and Structured text (Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, Beckhoff). Candidate should have strong electrical troubleshooting skills to include hands-on experience with control and power enclosures Will also be responsible for developing human machine interface (HMI) displays. Experience with Bills of Material and electrical schematics (AutoCAD Electrical). Experience with the Rockwell Automation software suite, including: Studio 5000 (formerly RSLogix 5000) Connected Components Workbench FactoryTalk View Studio DriveTools SP (DriveExecutive and DriveObserver) RSNetWorx for ControlNet Demonstrated ability to safely work with high-horsepower (600 hp) drive systems and related deck machinery. Demonstrated ability to safely work with energized equipment (480 VAC and 800 VDC). Technically able to pick up a variety of tools and rapidly become an effective contributor. Has demonstrated ability to adapt such methods to the needs of each project to yield most effective and optimal results. Experience with requirements capture, analysis, and documentation processes with subsequent architecture development. Has ability to drive each step to appropriate closure while observing critical technical, program, and business constraints. Experience selecting system components and creating purchase requisitions. Ability to perform at-sea testing aboard military vessels. At-sea testing may sometimes require extended work hours. Position requires travel to customer facilities and shipyards approximately 10-20% of the time. Extended travel is required during critical program phases. Excellent interpersonal skills for collaboration and teamwork (internally and with clients). Proven communication and presentation skills (written and oral). Excellent attention to detail. Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Experience providing field service support of shipboard equipment. Experience with the design and deployment of EtherNet/IP Device Level Ring (DLR) and/or Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) networks. Experience with the programming, tuning, and optimization of Rockwell Automation PowerFlex 700S, 700L, and 750 series variable frequency drives. Familiarity with safety circuit design, equipment electrical distribution and circuit protection design. Software development experience with the following languages: C++, C#, Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW. Supervision: Able to prioritize and perform tasks with minimal oversight and direction. Seeks clarification and coordination as necessary to maintain efficient progress. Recommends methods and procedures on new assignments.
