POSITION SUMMARY:
The Associate Interconnection Engineer will support interconnection analysis, applications, and power systems studies while developing expertise in utility-scale renewable energy projects. This position will report to the Vice President of Interconnection and Transmission and work directly with the Development team. This is a full-time position based in our Durham office.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Learn and support grid infrastructure analysis and utility report review to understand interconnection capacity evaluation
Assist with basic power flow analysis using TARA software under close supervision and training
Support basic PROMOD analysis activities with guidance from senior engineers
Coordinate technical input from vendors and consultants to meet interconnection application and study requirements
Assist in tracking consultant deliverables and schedules under supervision
Review basic consultant drawings and reports with guidance from Senior Interconnection Engineers
Support the preparation of interconnection applications and study agreement reviews
Help maintain interconnection schedules and track utility study progress
Participate in utility study review calls as a learning opportunity
Assist in basic technical due diligence activities for project acquisition opportunities
Learn technical standards (IEEE 1547, NERC requirements, utility tariffs) relevant to renewable energy projects
Begin developing programming skills in Python with training and mentorship
SKILLS AND PERSONAL QUALITIES
Basic understanding of utility grid fundamentals, including basic interconnection processes and transmission planning concepts
Willingness to learn utility grid operations, interconnection processes, and transmission planning concepts
Basic familiarity with power systems software (TARA, PSS/E, PSLF) preferred ,but willingness to learn required
Interest in learning programming languages (Python preferred) for developing internal analysis tools
Ability to build working relationships with utilities, vendors, and consultants
Strong collaboration, teamwork, and listening skills
Ability to prioritize tasks, manage competing deadlines, and contribute to a positive work environment
Strong sense of accountability and proactive problem-solving approach
Self-starter who operates well in an entrepreneurial and collaborative environment
Good oral, written communication, and presentation skills
Proficient in MS Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
EDUCATION/PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
0-1 years of experience (entry level position, new graduates welcome)
Academic coursework in power systems engineering is preferred but not required
Understanding of renewable energy technologies (solar PV, wind, battery storage) preferred
Internship experience in power systems, utilities, or renewable energy is preferred but not required
