We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Audio Engineer & Video Specialist to join the College of Arts and Letters. This individual will be a key contributor to the production and technical support of concerts, recitals, recordings, and special events, serving the Departments of Music, Sacred Music at Notre Dame, and occasionally Film, Television, and Theatre, and the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival.

About the Position

Reporting to the Production Manager, the Audio Engineer & Video Specialist oversees the setup, operation, and maintenance of audio and video equipment for a wide range of performances and productions. This position plays a crucial role in technical planning, live sound reinforcement, multi-camera recording, live streaming, and post-production editing. The role combines hands-on work with equipment and media, leadership and mentoring of students, and active collaboration with faculty, guest artists, and production staff.

This is a full-time position with frequent evening and weekend responsibilities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Audio & Video Management

  • Oversee and execute the setup and operation of audio and video equipment for live performances, recordings, and events.

  • Manage and execute audio and video recording and oversee use of the control room for all types of performances and for students’ graduate-school and job-application pre-screening recordings.

  • Install, circuit, and troubleshoot microphones, soundboards, speakers, projectors, cameras, and video switchers.

  • Design and implement soundscapes for performances as needed.

  • Edit audio and video recordings for distribution or archival purposes.

  • Coordinate and produce live streaming of events.

  • Maintain and update an organized inventory of equipment and archival performance recordings.

  • Monitor and manage adjustable acoustics in performance spaces.

  • Ensure all technical work is done in compliance with safety regulations.

Mentorship

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and mentor student technicians in audio and video operations.

  • Provide workshops and instruction on using the equipment for students, faculty, and staff.

  • Create meaningful educational opportunities through hands-on equipment training for students through production work.

Project Collaboration & Budget Oversight

  • Collaborate with departmental faculty, staff, designers, and the centralized production team to plan and execute events.

  • Attend design and production meetings; provide cost estimates and coordinate vendor services.

  • Manage production schedules and independently lead technical elements of audio and video projects.

General Production Support

  • Offer technical support across aforementioned departments as needed, contributing to the success of all performance-related initiatives in the College of Arts & Letters.

  • Assist with other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Audio Engineering, Video Production, Theatre Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Minimum of 2–3 years of professional experience in live sound and video production.

  • Experience working in classical and sacred music environments is preferred.

Skills

  • Proficiency in analog and digital audio systems, video capture, editing tools, and live-streaming platforms.

  • Ability to diagnose and repair A/V equipment.

  • Experience with audio editing (e.g., Pro Tools, Logic) and video editing (e.g., Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro).

  • Working knowledge of acoustics, copyright regulations, and university performance contexts.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage equipment inventories and complex production schedules.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • The ability to read music is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry 30–100 lbs.

  • Comfortable working at heights (e.g., 60+ feet on stage grids or lifts).

  • Ability to bend, stoop, and climb frequently.

  • Able to stand for extended periods in low-light or noisy environments during rehearsals and performances.
