Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled and hands-on Automation Support Engineer to join our team on the 2nd shift (3:30 PM – 12:00 AM). In this role, you will provide frontline technical support for automated liquid handlers (Tecan, Beckman, Revvity) as well as other general laboratory instruments. You will ensure maximum uptime, precision, and throughput for operations by diagnosing and resolving mechanical, electrical, and software issues in real time.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys independent problem-solving, can work with minimal supervision, and takes pride in keeping high-throughput lab systems running smoothly through the night.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Support

  • Monitor and support operation of automated liquid handling platforms (Tecan, Beckman, Revvity) and general lab equipment.
  • Perform real-time troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, and software issues to minimize downtime.
  • Escalate complex issues to senior engineers or vendors and follow through to resolution.
  • Execute system restarts, calibrations, and adjustments to maintain operational performance.
  • Track and manage changes in liquid handling methods

Preventive Maintenance & Continuous Improvement

  • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance and system checks during lower workload periods.
  • Log and track all issues, repairs, and downtime in maintenance systems.
  • Identify recurring problems and recommend improvements in coordination with engineering and production teams.
  • Assist in validating hardware/software changes, upgrades, and process modifications.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Documentation & Communication

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date equipment documentation, including service records, shift logs, incident reports, inventory, calibration certifications, and preventive maintenance records.
  • Coordinate and maintain records of equipment IQ/OQ/PQ
  • Provide clear end-of-shift handoffs to 2nd shift and coordinate with 1st shift as needed.
  • Train operators on proper use and care of automation equipment.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Biotechnology, Chemistry or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in automation support, robotics, instrumentation, or electromechanical troubleshooting in a laboratory setting.
  • Hands-on experience with automated liquid handlers (Tecan, Beckman, Revvity) or similar systems with proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
  • Experience in a regulated laboratory environment (CAP, CLIA, NYS) with an understanding of documentation and compliance requirements.
  • Capable of work independently in a high-throughput, fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail and operational accuracy.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, mechanical drawings, and SOPs.
  • Proficiency with basic tools, test equipment, and PC-based troubleshooting.

Preferred

  • Experience optimizing liquid handling methods and workflows to improve throughput, precision, and reliability.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and instrument integration.
  • Hands-on experience with next-generation sequencing (NGS) sample preparation workflows and the automation of NGS library prep.

Shift & Work Conditions

  • Shift: 2nd Shift, Monday–Friday, 3:30 PM - 12:00 AM (occasional weekend coverage as needed).
  • On-site role in a laboratory/production environment with extended standing, walking, and hands-on equipment interaction.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 40 lbs for equipment maintenance tasks.
  • Minimal direct supervision during shift; must be self-motivated and proactive in issue resolution.
