Fire Engineer
This is a non-exempt, sworn safety role under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The Engineer is assigned to one of the District’s six fire stations and works under the direct supervision of an on-duty Fire Captain. In the Captain’s absence, the Fire Engineer may be designated as the acting company officer. The role follows a standard 56-hour shift schedule and may include overtime based on operational needs.

Fire Engineers are responsible for driving and operating fire apparatus, performing skilled fire suppression and prevention activities, and assisting with company readiness under the Fire Captain’s guidance. Core duties include conducting fire prevention inspections of assigned occupancies, testing fire protection equipment, identifying hazardous conditions, and helping train personnel in fire safety procedures and fire code awareness. The role emphasizes precision, reliability, and technical proficiency in support of the company’s operational objectives.
Minimum Requirements:
Completed probation as Fire Engineer or 3 years’ experience as a permanent Fire Fighter (any agency)
CA SFM: Firefighter I/II, Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator 1A
ICS 100, 200, 700
High School/GED + 30 college units
Desirable Qualifications:
Rural fire district experience
Associate’s Degree
Company Officer 2A–2E, Instructor 1A
Bilingual
Strong ethics, teamwork, reliability, and judgment

Fire Engineer
$68,840 – $81,232
Increases to $87,880 with five-step pay scale
Fire Captain
$82,194 – $89,400
Increases to $99,907 with five-step pay scale
Note: This position currently follows a four-step pay range. Effective January 1, 2026, the pay structure expands to five steps, allowing for increased earnings at the top step.

Holiday Pay – 40-hr: 88 hrs; 56-hr: 1.5x for holidays worked
