The Hotel at the University of Maryland (The Hotel) is an AAA 4-Diamond independent property located directly across the street from the main campus of the University of Maryland. The Hotel is a market leader in service and guest experience, and the team is focused on delivering highly personalized service. The Hotel has 297 rooms, including 9 suites, and over 45,000 sq. ft. of meeting and event space, accommodating events ranging from 10 to 1,500 guests. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
The ideal Chief Engineer for the Hotel at the University of Maryland is an experienced, certified, and established building engineer with strong communication, leadership, and guest service experience. The Chief Engineer is the lead operational compliance officer for the property, ensuring systems, preventive maintenance, and guest requests are addressed in a timely manner while delivering excellent service. The ability to develop team members in operational excellence through skill-building and developing strong partnerships with the Hotel manager, Area Director of Engineering, and General Manager is essential.
WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU:
- Overall responsibility for the performance of engineering team members, including safety, performance, guest service, and other measures as appropriate.
- Review and monitor all time by means of timecards, supplement logs, punch out sheets, service requests, and on-call logs.
- Participate in oversight of all renovation activities in coordination with the General Manager, Project Manager, Area Director of Engineering, and others as required.
- Lead communication with Southern service team members in required work in the shared physical plant systems to ensure maintenance, upkeep, and performance is maintained.
- Create and maintain HotSOS protocols for preventive maintenance of the public areas, exterior, and grounds, and provide monthly feedback on trends and performance recommendations.
- Utilize HotSOS and other tools to monitor response times, feedback, problem trends, and overall effectiveness of the hotel maintenance team.
- Provide complete support to the Hotel manager in upholding property and Southern standards, policies, and procedures.
- Ensure all team members attend required training and assist in ongoing training as required.
- Schedule, conduct, and document regular department meetings with team members.
- Perform team member discussions, warning notices, and performance appraisals with counseling and coaching goals, using the appropriate forms for documentation in partnership with Human Resources and other Hotel leaders as appropriate.
- Check all service team members' tools regularly for conditions, ensuring uniform appearance is in accordance with the property dress code policy.
- Work closely with the Area Director of Engineering in identifying, negotiating, scheduling, and executing service contracts.
- Ensure the pool and surrounding area are maintained to property standards and in code compliance.
- Maintain the maintenance shop, company equipment, ensuring ample supplies, inventory controls, and key security are maintained.
- Responsible for the Engineering maintenance in compliance to Southern standards.
- Understand and perform all job duties and responsibilities of the Maintenance Engineer, when necessary, to include on-call coverage, and to provide opportunities to train, test, and follow up on individual team member performance.
- Prepared to respond and act in emergency situations, following Southern and property emergency procedures.
- Assist in all department-related audits (Safety, Physical Asset, etc.) and ensure all marked items are resolved in accordance with required timelines.
- Acknowledge all guests and respond promptly to their needs, however busy and whatever time of day. Ensure that unresolved incidents are reported to the requesting department, the Area Director of Engineering, the Hotel Manager, and the General Manager immediately.
- Ensure individual and team familiarity with all hotel services/features and local attractions/activities to respond to guest inquiries accurately.
- Familiarity in elevator operations, contract and code compliance, and coordination of contractor work to limit operational impact.
- Maintain knowledge and compliance with departmental policies, service procedures, and standards.
- Availability during peak operating times, i.e., Weekends, Holidays, and Special Events.
- Attend department meetings and training sessions as necessary.
- Effectively manage staff through respectful communication, clear expectations, relevant training, productive coaching, holding regular team meetings, and appropriate performance management.
- Lead by example, be a positive example for the team in action and attitude.
- Delegate work as appropriate, clearly stating objectives and time-line requirements, and follow up to ensure completion.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Manager and/or Supervisor.
JOB KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Ability to effectively supervise and motivate a team of up to five or more team members.
- Thorough knowledge of each job description, as it pertains to self and team members.
- Ability to understand, demonstrate, and ensure team compliance with all necessary national and local building codes, safety codes, labor laws, including but not limited to safe work practices, sexual harassment prevention, ADA, etc.
- Able to effectively follow and implement SMC and property standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines, including but not limited to safety, OSHA, personnel appearance, maintenance etiquette, and tool requirements.
- Maintain high productivity and effective cost controls.
- Compute basic arithmetic and mathematical calculations.
- Excellent time management and interpersonal skills.
- Strong leadership and managerial skills.
- Ability to work effectively in stressful, high-pressure situations while maintaining composure and guest satisfaction.
- Technically knowledgeable and competent in necessary systems and software.
- Ability to operate mechanical equipment and various tools.
- Have excellent English communication skills and be able to read, write, and speak fluently.
- Minimum of three (3) years of Chief Engineer, Director, or Assistant Director experience in a full-service hotel.
- A strong bilingual speaker is preferred but not required.
- Must have any government-required licenses, certificates, or permits.
- High School Diploma or equivalentbachelor's degree or Technical School experience preferred.
- Demonstrated skill and experience in the repair and maintenance of various pieces of building and grounds equipment, and the ability to train others.
