Opportunity Summary
A rapidly scaling defense technology startup is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to support the development and manufacturing of innovative IR, lidar, and laser-based sensor systems. With production accelerating for a key defense program, this role blends mechanical design, manufacturing support, and production tooling, offering a rare opportunity to make a direct impact on systems actively being deployed. Job Duties
- Design and develop precision mechanical components, fixtures, and systems for advanced optoelectronic products
- Create detailed models and drawings using SolidWorks; generate accurate BOMs and support DFM practices
- Lead and iterate tooling and fixture designs to support semi-automated production lines
- Collaborate closely with engineers and technicians to support prototype builds, production assembly, and packaging
- Apply a variety of fabrication techniques including CNC machining, 3D printing, and extrusions
- Troubleshoot mechanical performance issues and implement upgrades for cost-effective manufacturability
- Support ongoing and next-generation development cycles for products already in fielded use
- Contribute to performance-enhancing redesigns, yield improvements, and ruggedization efforts
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent hands-on experience
- 2+ years of experience in mechanical design, ideally for hardware intended for small-batch or mid-rate production
- Proficiency with SolidWorks and related CAD tools
- Strong grasp of mechanical design fundamentals and practical DFM/DFA practices
- Hands-on experience with 3D printing, CNC machining, and typical hardware assembly
- Comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities
- Clear, logical approach to design reviews, documentation, and team collaboration
Preferred Experience
- Exposure to light automation or electromechanical systems (Python, Arduino, or PLC a plus)
- Experience designing ruggedized components for defense or industrial systems
- Familiarity with vacuum packaging, thermal design, or mechanical assembly for photonics systems
- Previous work supporting transition from engineering to production (tooling, fixtures, and cost reduction)

Compensation Details
$80,000 - $120,000
