Mechanical Project Engineer Job Summary
The Mechanical Project Engineer is responsible for supporting the design and detail engineering of aluminum and steel vessels. This role provides technical guidance and coordination across project teams, internal departments, suppliers, and subcontractors to ensure high-quality and efficient construction. The engineer will be deeply involved in mechanical system design, regulatory compliance, 3D modeling, and production support throughout the vessel construction lifecycle.
Mechanical Project Engineer Responsibilities Provide engineering and technical direction for assigned projects, ensuring alignment with project scope.
Perform or review regulatory and class-level calculations and generate detailed technical reports.
Design and review vessel mechanical systems, including models, construction drawings, and bills of materials.
Perform and validate 3D modeling using industry-standard software.
Create lofted and extruded plate parts for CNC cutting and forming.
Develop and review regulatory drawings and ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards.
Support and lead engineering and design reviews with internal stakeholders and clients.
Coordinate with production teams to ensure construction aligns with design intent.
Serve as a liaison among Engineering, Project Management, and Production to resolve design issues.
Maintain and develop models in Ship Constructor and SolidWorks.
Develop engineering standards, procedures, standard blocks, and details.
Produce and review project documentation including RFIs, Submittals, ECRs, and NCRs.
Act as a Subject Matter Expert and provide technical advice to management.
Mentor junior engineers and provide oversight to internal teams or subcontracted design agents.
Participate in sea trials and periodically monitor construction progress in the shipyard.
Support preliminary project estimation efforts.
Ensure compliance with all workplace safety standards and company policies. Mechanical Project Engineer Position Requirements Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline required; marine or mechanical engineering preferred.
Minimum five (5) years of marine industry experience, specifically in vessel design and construction.
Experience with regulatory bodies such as CFR, Classing Societies, ABYC, IEEE, and military contract requirements preferred.
Proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Rhino, Ship Constructor, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Strong knowledge of vessel design, mechanical systems, arrangements, and outfitting.
Familiarity with ERP and PDM systems is desirable.
Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and organizational skills.
Strong communication skills-verbal, written, and interpersonal.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet tight specifications with attention to detail.
Capable of working independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
U.S. Citizenship required due to government contract restrictions.
Must pass pre-employment drug, alcohol screening, and background check.
May be required to supervise and mentor up to two engineers/designers or oversee engineering subcontractors.
