Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field investigations and perform failure/accident analysis on incidents including train derailments, pedestrian strikes and vehicular impacts at railroad/highway grade crossings
  • Evaluate rolling stock component related failures
  • Investigate design, safety and failure of machinery and mechanical systems
  • Perform calculations, engineering analysis, computer analyses and simulations and technical reporting
  • Provide technical findings and conclusions in laymen's terms, both verbally and in writing
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies
  • Regular and predictable physical presence in the office
  • Long term goal to become testifying expert
  • Ability to accept and integrate constructive feedback into job performance
  • Regular and predictable presence at work

Position Requirements:

  • B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering required
  • P. E. license preferred
  • Seven years of post-academic engineering work experience preferred
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Computer skills with spreadsheets, word processing and presentation software is a must
  • Computer aided drawing skills is a plus
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Public speaking experience is a plus

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to travel 35% of the time
  • Ability to maneuver in and around an accident site
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Ability to carry equipment to and from job sites
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to drive in all conditions
  • Ability to fly on airplanes
  • Ability to effectively communicate with clients and colleagues
  • Ability to visually inspect job sites and relevant artifacts
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment as required by the work site
  • Ability to learn a new industry and obtain required certifications
