Network Engineer

The Network Engineer provides operational support and stability of the University's voice, data, video, and/or wireless network services. Part of the team responsible for the configuration, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the University's data network. This includes local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), switches, routers, firewalls, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and/or wireless and wired access layers. Participates in a team responsible for optimal network performance in a 24/7 environment. Knowledge of Extreme Networks switch gear is a plus. Project Coordination/Implementation: Team member or individual lead of a wide variety of project work aligned with the priorities of other ITS departments. Serve on teams responsible for a wide variety of ITS project work. Prepare project specification worksheets, drawings, spreadsheets, inventory requirements, and parts lists. Monitoring/Troubleshooting: Provide operational support to troubleshoot and offer hands-on assistance with resolving issues in existing systems or services. Diagnose local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and wireless networks to ensure smooth and reliable operations. Serve as the first line of defense for network outages. A working knowledge of network protocols is desired. Technical Documentation: Responsible for the creation and ongoing review of performance metrics. -Monitor performance metrics for trend analysis. Execute established processes to address and resolve service tickets. Prepare, review, and update technical documentation. Role Specific Competencies: Must possess a core understanding of IP routing and subnetting, WiFi and Ethernet technologies, and network protocols. Familiar with networking switches, routers, controllers, and Internet of Things (IoT) network equipment. Working knowledge of Simple Management Network Protocol (SNMP) management tools, performance measurement tools, and planning tools and techniques. Knowledge of network and computer operating systems, as well as network services, protocols, and standards. Utilize working knowledge of packet-level analysis tools. Familiarity with Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) and Virtual Private Network (VPN) systems. Familiarity with cabling infrastructure distribution/termination facilities, manhole and conduit systems. And fiber optic cabling, and related cabling systems and standards. Telecommunications experience to include working knowledge of voicemail, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), unified messaging, call processing, call recording systems, voice and data cabling systems, and voice. Working knowledge of appropriate security standards and protocols. Title and salary commensurate with relevant experience based on the following titles and hiring ranges: Senior level (5 + years exp) salary range: 96k – k Mid-level (3-5 years exp) salary range: 79k – 99k Associate level (1-3 years exp) salary range: 72k - 90k
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related Area. Experience with VLANs, data switch configuration, network monitoring, and wireless network support. Experience configuring, installing, testing, and troubleshooting edge switches, wireless access points, TV streaming services, VPN, voice & video over Ethernet, network monitoring, and response to outages in a 7/24 environment. (Network Operations). Configuration of network devices as well as cabling in a large LAN/WAN environment. Experience with router configuration, including virtual port channels, VLANs, configuration, and troubleshooting. Work Environment: This position requires the lifting and moving of equipment, working in confined spaces, and driving service vehicles. This position is on-premise. Occasional ad hoc work from home may be available for certain situations with manager approval.
