Optical Process Engineer
As an Optical Process Engineer at Reality Labs, you'll play a crucial role in bringing transformative AR/VR experiences to life. This involves developing and productizing precision optical components that are essential for our next-generation devices. You will join and lead a team focused on innovative concepts and approaches, driven by the unique demands of advanced AR/VR. Your responsibilities will include developing prototypes and products, establishing new process capabilities with our supply-chain partners, and releasing sub-systems ready for high-volume manufacturing. We are looking for individuals who excel in multidisciplinary teams, seamlessly transitioning between conceptualizing bold ideas and meticulously executing critical details to ensure technological success. The ideal candidate will possess a demonstrated engineering background, a data-driven approach, and a proven track record of successfully guiding products from concept to mass production.
Optical Process Engineer Responsibilities
- Develop precision optical components for AR/VR devices from concept to mass production
- Manage external vendor collaborations and oversee Design for Manufacturing (DFM), including material selection, process optimization, metrology, and quality control
- Analyze, visualize, and present data for problem-solving
- Identify novel materials and fabrication techniques in heterogeneous system lamination, optical surface generation, and optical coating to enable future generation optics and displays
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to devise and execute program priorities
- Lead critical meetings (e.g., vendor routine meetings, building readiness reviews, building summary reports, and design reviews) and drive key discussions for decision-making
- Manage the process major issue list, conduct process troubleshooting and root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions
- Design and optimize manufacturing process flows, and design and develop manufacturing tooling
- Assist in the development of test methods for optical components and ensure timely alignment of QC methods between upstream and downstream processes
Minimum Qualifications
- 6+ years of experience in manufacturing and process development of optical components
- Solid experience with optical material development, optical component fabrication, optical coating and techniques and engineering
- Good knowledge of process engineering principles, including process flow, equipment selection, and material handling
- Hands-on experience in optical manufacturing processes, including injection molding, compression molding, diamond turning, and polishing
- Good understanding of optical AR coating processes and corresponding test methods
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or PhD in Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Optical Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of experience managing vendors for process development and manufacturing for optical components & optical plastic lens
- Good experience with material characterization and optical test and metrology
- Proficiency in DOE design and data analysis for problem-solving
- In-depth precision engineering knowledge with good expertise in CAD modeling and creating drawings using GD&T
