Principal Research Engineer - Generative AI - AI Frontiers Overview The AI Frontiers lab at Microsoft Research is dedicated to advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities in key areas such as modeling, algorithms, reasoning, and agentic AI. Our lab fosters a vibrant environment for cutting-edge multidisciplinary research, with an open publication policy and close collaborations with top academic institutions worldwide. This Principal Research Engineer position offers a unique opportunity to tackle some of the most challenging and rewarding problems in AI. You will contribute to developing novel ideas in reinforcement learning and help evolve our codebases related to pre-training, mid-training, and post-training techniques that have led to models like Phi, setting new records. You will collaborate with researchers and engineers across disciplines to push the boundaries of reasoning and agentic AI. Our lab provides opportunities for experimentation with diverse real-world problems and data, with the potential to deploy research to over a billion Microsoft customers. Our projects include Phi, Orca, AutoGen, Eureka, OmniParser, Magnetic-One, Magnetic-UI, Dion, Belief State Transformers, among others. Our research areas encompass, but are not limited to: Pre-training: language models, action models, and multimodal models Mid-training: long context extension Post-training: instruction tuning and reinforcement learning from feedback Reasoning: enabling large language models to scale inference time compute via reinforcement learning Action Models: models capable of taking actions in digital environments (e.g., web agents) Orchestration and multi-agent systems: coordinating multiple agents with collaboration, human feedback, and oversight If your skills and interests align with any of these areas, we encourage you to apply and join us in this exciting journey!
