Job Summary


The Product Development Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and refining sign products and systems from concept through production. This role works cross-functionally with design, sales, operations, and manufacturing teams to bring innovative and cost-effective sign solutions to market, balancing aesthetics, function, material, code compliance, and manufacturability.


Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and/or review customer specifications to ensure proper design and manufacturability.
  • Design signage based on customer-provided artwork and brand guidelines using established internal processes.
  • Create and revise detailed 3D CAD models and shop drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Complete full 3D CAD models and production-ready documentation for new products.
  • Onboard and maintain customer specifications and documentation used by all internal departments.
  • Manage prototype builds, testing, and evaluation to validate new product designs.
  • Select appropriate materials, fasteners, lighting, and fabrication methods to optimize quality and cost.
  • Ensure products meet applicable regulatory requirements (e.g., UL, ADA, local codes).
  • Assist in cost estimating and quoting by identifying materials, labor hours, and vendor needs.
  • Provide technical support for manufacturing teams and troubleshoot design-related issues.
  • Research and integrate new materials, fabrication technologies, and industry trends into product offerings.
  • Maintain accurate and organized engineering documentation throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Support cross-functional teams during new product launches or design changes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field required.
  • 3+ years of product development or mechanical design experience preferred; signage industry experience a plus.
  • Proficiency in Engineering Software (SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, etc.) required. SolidWorks experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of materials (metals, plastics, composites), LED lighting systems, and manufacturing techniques (bending, welding, routing, printing, etc.).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly across departments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a hands-on approach to prototyping and testing.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work


This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. Core hours are Monday- Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively across departments (engineering, manufacturing, sales, etc.).
  • High degree of focus and concentration for extended periods when modeling or reviewing detailed designs.
  • Capable of documenting and communicating complex ideas clearly in both written and verbal formats.

Physical Demands:

  • Regular use of a computer with prolonged sitting and keyboarding (up to 8 hours/day).
  • Occasional standing, walking, and bending when collaborating with production teams or during prototype evaluation.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. for materials, models, or samples as needed.
  • Occasional travel to vendor sites, customer locations, or manufacturing facilities may be required.
  • Visual acuity to read detailed engineering drawings and inspect prototypes or materials.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses or hearing protection while on the production floor.
