POSITION SUMMARY:
The Product Engineer of Hard Goods is responsible for optimizing mechanical design, manufacturability, performance, structural rigidity and robustness, and functionality across an entire line of products with focus on hunting, shooting, marine, and the outdoors. The Product Engineer plays a critical role working closely with Product Designers on engineering projects, while at the same time taking ownership and leading projects that are focal on performance, functionality, material selection, and advanced mechanical design. The successful Engineer will have the technical ability to bring products from ideation through to commercialization and/or manufacturing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Utilizes all aspects of design and development for products: critical engineering elements, optimal functionality, cost effective design, quality, documentation standards and records, optimal performance, mechanical design, documentation, improvements and problem resolution.
Holds direct responsibility and accountability for product testing, failure mode analysis, product verification, product validation and root cause analysis.
Creates concepts, performance, and production criteria.
Ability to convert concepts into 3D models.
Provides product cost estimates.
Evaluates design alternatives based on cost, quality, and production feasibility.
Works with global supply base to optimize and document product design and requirements for production quality.
Conducts design reviews with the design and development teams.
Leads the engineering on projects that are focal on performance, and which require advanced mechanical design, material selection, and design analysis.
Collaborates with Product Designer(s) on projects utilizing Industrial Design input.
Collaborate with product developers on product requirements, sourcing requirements, supplier manufacturing and quality requirements, costing and BOM requirements, functionality, and durability requirements.
Collaborates with development teams on product requirements and key features, new product category and expansion opportunities, and overall Brand direction, cohesion, and growth strategy. Understands target customers and applications, competitive landscape analysis and advantages, retail needs and opportunities to win market share.
Collaborates with Suppliers and Manufacturers on optimal design for manufacture, cost reduction measures, key functionality and performance requirements, and supply chain capability.
Collaborates with packaging designers to develop retail packaging, considering retail footprint requirements and limitations, shipping and distribution durability and feasibility, marketability, and brand cohesion.
Designs, builds, and tests prototypes. Rapid prototyping capabilities and proficiency, including but not limited to 3D printing, CNC machining, sourcing of standard components, improvisation, etc.
Improves costs, quality, and design of existing products.
Builds and maintains professional, constructive working relationships with other departments and suppliers.
Resolves quality and customer support issues by lending expertise to respective departments

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Degree Required: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Industrial Design, or Equivalent working experience.
Years of experience: 3+ years of experience on a product engineering team, with a focus on quality, reliability, and commercialization
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:
Engineering consumer products, preferably in the outdoor industry
Must have design experience designing parts for CNC, injection molding and castings.
Strong skills in 3D CAD modeling complex assemblies; SolidWorks preferred.
Experience in FEA and product testing
Knowledge and experience with supplier management
Proven experience in precision manufacturing and design for manufacture
Microsoft Office
Strong presentation and communication skills, and the ability to lead brainstorming, design review, product brief, and other types of meetings
Manage and prioritize time and resources
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Project management
Attentive to detail
Strong organization skills, multi-tasking capabilities, and active priority management skills
Judgment and problem-solving skills based on advanced or technical concepts
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Minimal. Less than 20 days per year. May include international travel to supplier’s factories.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Regular computer work, walking, sitting, standing and the lifting up to 50lbs
INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT :
Performs duties within scope of general company policies, procedures, and objectives. Analyzes problems and performs needs assessments. Uses judgment in adapting broad guidelines to achieve desired result. Regular exercise of independent judgment within accepted practices. Makes recommendations that affect policies, procedures, and practices.
