Responsibilities include designing, developing, and maintaining RESTFUL APIs for time tracking, scheduling, and payroll integration; collaborating with product managers and designers to define API specifications and ensure seamless integration with other Gusto products; leading the technical design and implementation of new features and enhancements to the time management platform; mentoring and guiding junior engineers; writing clean, well-documented, and testable code; participating in code reviews; working with large-scale data stores and optimizing for performance and reliability; troubleshooting and resolving production issues related to time-tracking and API functionality. Requirements include 12+ years of experience in software engineering with a recent focus on backend development, 8+ years building and maintaining backend systems, 3+ years designing, developing, and deploying RESTful APIs, strong understanding of API design principles, experience with relational databases and data modeling, proficiency in at least one modern programming language (Java, Python, Go), experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), and strong written communication and collaboration skills. Experience with Ruby on Rails, B2B, Payroll and HRIS, and prior technical leadership roles are a plus. Travel to Gusto’s Denver office for onboarding is required. Employees based in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City offices are expected to work from the office approximately 2-3 days per week. Secure, reliable internet connection is required when working remotely.
