Position Description At a Glance
Legrand  has an exciting opportunity for a  Senior Mechanical Engineer  to join the  Data Power & Control  in  New London, CT or Conover, NC . The Sr. Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design of opto-mechanical components and assemblies, including product test validation for new products, product enhancements, and VAVE/cost savings. Works individually or as part of a design team to develop, evaluate, and validate product designs and specifications. Also conducts design reviews, validates and approves documentation packages, preproduction builds, and production transfer. Provides mentor guidance and support to engineering team members across disciplines.
What Will You Do?
Provide direction and project management for opto-mechanical design and test validation efforts. Work closely with Product Marketing, Manufacturing and other Engineering personnel during product conceptualization phases and throughout the project phases.
Work closely with Project Management to schedule, track and maintain up-to-date project schedules and milestone due-date requirements.
Provide maintenance of existing opto-mechanical products and documentation (design improvements, VAVE cost savings, etc.) and product databases through the Engineering Change process.
Design and develop opto-mechanical systems and customized solutions, utilizing many methods such as injection molding, metal forming, casting, and extrusion processes.
Utilize 2D and 3D SolidWorks CAD systems to perform detailed design analysis, including kinematic and kinetic, structural, thermal and finite element analysis methods.
Provide mechanical materials and tooling DFMA cost studies. Work with appropriate vendors to develop cost effective realization of design.
Work with Product Management to develop technical Product Requirements specifications and quality assurance protocols.
Initiate, lead, and participate in cross-functional opto-mechanical design reviews with other engineering, manufacturing, and marketing personnel.
Coordinate rapid prototype validation requirements with internal Tooling Manager and Outside Design supplier.
Provide detailed test report summaries and analysis for all product test validation requirements.
Participation in standard bodies (TIA, IEC, etc.) a plus.
Perform other similar and related duties as required.
Qualifications Education:
BS in Mechanical Engineering, MSME preferred.
Experience:
Minimum 5 to 7 years of related product engineering work experience.
Five plus years minimum design experience in mechanical design and/or opto-mechanical systems required.
Leadership and project management skills and experience required. Some manufacturing experience desired.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
Extensive Experience with SolidWorks 2D/3D modeling software
5+ years opto-mechanical or mechanical system design experience
Enterprise PDM knowledge
SolidWorks Professional Mechanical Design proficiency
Proficiency with SolidWorks Simulation
Product compliance and Environmental Process knowledge
Utilization of DFMA tools to reduce product complexity and cost
Experience with device-level physical packaging & production processes
Materials design (Plastic, metals, composites)
Manufacturing Process knowledge
MIG & TIG welding
Powder coat paint processes
IMD, IML, screen-print, pad-print decorative techniques
Anodize and Electrolysis-coating processes
Preferred knowledge and/or experience with product engineering requirements
Experience and expertise with fiber optic product design and related standards for domestic and international  markets, with an emphasis on fiber optic connector design
Knowledge in fiber optics and relevant metrologies, such as insertion loss, return loss, and end face geometry interferometric measurements
Familiarity with TIA, IEC, ISO/IEC, & IEEE standards related to fiber optics, fiber connectivity and other relevant fields
Engineering documentation, BOM data management, material management & outsource management
Mold flow and tool design
Tolerance stack-up analysis - Knowledge of GD&T
Structural FEM/FEA methods and procedures
Thermal management CFD methods and procedures (Optional)
Engineering ECN process implementation
Knowledge in product production (prototype to production transition, production test plan, DFMA)
Knowledge of product quality and reliability (environmental test, stress test etc.)
Familiar with mechanical test and measurement systems (i.e. Vision measurement, force)
General knowledge of product safety, sustainability, and other regulatory requirements (UL, CE, RoHS)
ISO-9001 documentation principles
Sustainability & Eco-Design principles
3d print technology familiarity
Color theory
Rendering design experience
Salary Range: $107,000-$120,000
