As a Senior PHP Engineer at Plexus, you will play a critical role in supporting our Adobe Commerce platform by guiding internal development teams in adopting and delivering within the PHP ecosystem. This role provides the senior-level expertise, mentorship, and technical leadership needed to establish best practices, ensure high-quality delivery, and help our teams build confidence and capability in working with Adobe Commerce.

Key Performance Objectives
Collaborate with engineering leadership to define, document, and promote PHP coding standards and best practices across all development teams working with Adobe Commerce.
Conduct a comprehensive review of the existing Adobe Commerce implementation to identify technical debt, architectural risks, and opportunities for optimization or modularization.
Begin mentoring internal engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and working sessions to accelerate comfort and capability with PHP and the Adobe Commerce platform.
Partner with Digital Product and Architecture teams to evaluate Phase 2 Adobe Commerce features, provide technical feasibility input, and assist in shaping well-defined, actionable backlogs for upcoming sprints.
Assess current practices and evaluate options for local development, code branching, deployments, and CI/CD processes specific to Adobe Commerce, and recommend scalable workflows that align with existing engineering standards.
Work with the Development Manager to assess the team's current proficiency in PHP and Adobe Commerce, and collaboratively develop a targeted mentorship and knowledge-sharing plan to support skill growth and platform adoption.
Transition Ownership from Vendor to In-House Team (First 120 Days)
Contribute directly to the development and successful delivery of key Adobe Commerce features, ensuring code quality, maintainability, and alignment with business goals.
Reinforce adoption of PHP coding standards and Adobe Commerce best practices through ongoing code reviews, documentation, and pairing sessions, ensuring consistency and quality across engineering teams.
Work closely with architecture, DevOps, and QA teams to identify and address technical constraints or performance bottlenecks in Adobe Commerce, helping to ensure the platform can scale with future business needs (with a focus on international expansion).
Essential Functions
Provide hands-on technical contributions to the Adobe Commerce platform, ensuring scalable, maintainable, and high-quality PHP code that aligns with business needs and platform standards.
Evaluate and recommend improvements to the existing Adobe Commerce architecture, identifying technical debt, performance issues, and opportunities for modularization and future scalability.
Technical Leadership
Collaborate with engineering leadership to define, document, and drive adoption of PHP development standards and workflows tailored to Adobe Commerce.
Guide internal teams on technical best practices, implementation patterns, and platform capabilities to accelerate self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on vendors.
Work closely with Product, QA, DevOps, and Architecture to shape the technical feasibility of Phase 2 features and assist in backlog development.
Contribute to cross-functional planning, working sessions, and design efforts to ensure the Adobe Commerce platform integrates seamlessly with internal processes and systems.
Partner with the Development Manager to assess skill gaps and implement a mentorship plan that supports PHP and Adobe Commerce upskilling across engineering teams.
Lead by example through pair programming, code reviews, and working sessions to reinforce best practices and accelerate learning.
Security & Documentation
Promote secure coding practices and identify potential risks within the Adobe Commerce implementation.
Develop and maintain clear, accessible documentation for coding standards, workflows, and platform
Performance-Based Qualifications
Educational Foundation
Holds a bachelors degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent, demonstrating the technical foundation necessary to architect and scale enterprise-grade systems.
PHP Expertise & Framework Proficiency
Brings 8+ years of hands-on PHP development experience, with a proven ability to deliver production-ready solutions using advanced features in Laravel, Symfony, or Zendresulting in reduced tech debt and increased development velocity.
Scalable Systems Delivery
Has a track record of shipping scalable, maintainable, and testable applications, evidenced by high system uptime, low regression rates, and positive end-user feedback.
Internal Capability Building
Demonstrates success in replacing third-party vendor solutions by enabling internal teams to own critical codebases, reducing outsourcing costs and accelerating feature delivery.
Frontend Collaboration & Integration
Effectively collaborates with frontend teams, leveraging knowledge of frameworks such as React, Vue.js, or Angular to ensure seamless backend-to-frontend integration and exceptional user experience.
Cross-Functional Communication
Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, facilitating alignment and informed decision-making.
