POSITION Summary:
The Staff Audio Engineer is primarily responsible for running shows, shop builds, load-in, and load-out for the Alliance Theatre's productions, including LORT B and D stages, as well as Theatre for Young Audiences shows. The Audio Engineer also works closely with other members of the Alliance Staff including: other Audio Staff, Electrics Crews, Stage Operations Crews, Properties Crews, Stage Managers, and Actors.
This is a full-time, year-round position, based on the calendar schedule of Alliance productions.
Pay is base on collective bargaining agreement with IATSE Local 927.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Ensure professional installation of all audio equipment, as needed
- Read and follow paperwork and instruction to prep audio system cable for installation
- Assist in safe rigging of and focus of loudspeakers and other equipment
- Attend run-throughs and assist in paperwork generation for show run
- Light fabrication and customization of audio-related projects
- Complete preshow equipment checks
- Maintain a professional appearance and attitude, particularly when interacting with patrons and other team members
- Attend to the actors in a calm and pleasant manor as part of a show crew
- Assist actors with dressing and wearing wireless microphone equipment
- Run QLab show playback systems
- Participate in executing sound design for shows
- Solder and repair cabling as needed
- Troubleshoot com, video, cue light, and wireless systems
- Set up and strike tech tables during preview performances
- Assist with strike at the end of a show run
- Re-stock equipment and cable of struck shows
Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Experience:
- Prior experience running sound and mixing wireless microphones for theatrical productions
- Experience in basic theatrical audio equipment including mixing consoles, QLab show control software, Mac computers, and wireless microphone setup
- Experience working with Equity actors or LORT theatres preferred
- College degree in technical theater or equivalent experience preferred
Skills and Abilities:
- Must be skilled in following signal flow and basic audio connectors
- Must have strong listening, interpersonal and communication skills
- Must be organized and able to interpret and follow directions
- Must be able to stay calm under pressure
- Ability to reliably work a variable schedule based on season calendar
- Strong expertise programming QLab or mixing sound for musical theatre
- Strong expertise with computer networking and troubleshooting
- Strong expertise with electronics, soldering, and troubleshooting
- Familiarity with Dante, AVB, Milan, or other digital networking protocols preferred
- Proficiency with wireless, head-worn microphones and their rigging
- Proficiency with safely rigging loudspeakers at heights above 6 feet
- Proficiency safely working with, and wiring, electrical connectors
- Proficiency with closed circuit video systems and Clear-Com systems preferred
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, or other computer drafting, preferred
- Familiarity with OSC, MIDI, NDI, FileMaker, Fusion360, Wavetool, or scripting languages (Python, Lua, AppleScript) a plus
- Operate hand and power tools safely
- Qualified candidates must complete Dante Levels 1-3 Certification, and QSYS Training Levels 1-2 upon hire
