Location:Boston, Massachusetts (Greater Boston area including Cambridge, Somerville, and surrounding metropolitan region - Local position with minimal travel up to 10-15% within New England)


Salary Range:$125,000$145,000 (Adjusted for Boston market rates and cost of living)



Reporting To:Senior Engineering Leadership

Our client, a national leader in structural preservation, is expanding its specialized engineering team in the Boston metropolitan area and needs a Senior Structural Engineer to inspect, diagnose, and repair complex parking structures and infrastructure throughout Greater Boston and New England.

You'll use cutting-edge inspection technology (like smart glasses for live technical guidance, GPR, and imaging tools) to lead structural assessments primarily within the Boston area, focusing on the region's unique mix of historic structures, modern developments, and challenging urban environments.

This role combines office-based engineering work with regular field inspections throughout the Boston metropolitan area. The Senior Structural Engineer will focus on high-priority projects within Massachusetts and New England, performing on-site inspections, diagnosing concrete and structural issues, and recommending long-term repair or preservation strategies for Boston's unique challenges including freeze-thaw cycles, aging infrastructure, and seismic considerations.

What You'll Do

  • Conduct structural inspections of parking garages, commercial buildings, and mixed-use developments throughout Greater Boston, focusing on concrete durability, freeze-thaw damage, and repair design
  • Work with both modern structures and historic buildings requiring specialized preservation approaches
  • Utilize state-of-the-art technologies and non-destructive testing methods (NDE) to conduct comprehensive structural assessments across New England markets
  • Serve as a technical expert for high-priority Boston-area accounts
  • Address Boston-specific structural challenges including harsh winter conditions, salt corrosion from de-icing, aging infrastructure, and seismic retrofit requirements
  • Diagnose complex structural issues and develop engineering solutions compliant with Massachusetts Building Code and Boston-specific regulations
  • Navigate historic preservation requirements and work with Boston Landmarks Commission when applicable
  • Create detailed engineering reports that account for New England's freeze-thaw cycles and urban environmental factors
  • Collect data via non-destructive testing methods (e.g., ground-penetrating radar, corrosion mapping)
  • Draft assessment reports and repair solutions, collaborating with local and regional design teams


What You Need

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Related Field(Master's Preferred)
  • PE License (Massachusetts preferred, or ability to obtain Massachusetts licensure quickly)
  • 57+ years in structural engineering, ideally with concrete/material science focus
  • Understanding of Massachusetts Building Code and Boston municipal requirements
  • Experience with field assessments, inspections, or forensic engineering
  • Knowledge of New England's climate challenges (freeze-thaw cycles, snow loading, de-icing salt corrosion)
  • Familiarity with seismic design requirements for Massachusetts
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for client and municipal presentations
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining strong team collaboration


(Nice-to-haves)

  • Experience with historic preservation and adaptive reuse projects
  • Background in parking structures, retrofit design, or construction oversight in urban New England environments
  • Knowledge of Boston's complex permitting and approval processes
  • Experience working with Massachusetts Historical Commission or Boston Landmarks Commission
  • Leadership experience with proven ability to manage teams and drive results
  • Familiarity with MBTA or other transit authority structural requirements


Compensation and Benefits
