Supplier Quality Engineer

Basic Function and Scope of Position:

Establishes the quality standards for suppliers who are providing materials per specifications.

Impact:

The quality assurance group ensures the quality of the parts going into the product as well as the quality of the product being shipped to the customer.

Work Performed:

1. Visits supplier sites to observe material manufacture.

2. Develops, applies, revises and maintains supplier quality standards.

3. Designs and implements methods and procedures (supplier surveys, supplier ratings/report cards) for evaluating the precision/accuracy/quality of supplier products.

4. Analyzes reports and returned products and recommends corrective and preventive action.

5. Prepares documentation for inspection/testing procedures.

Supervision Received:

Works within Corporate and Department objectives. Defines and implements programs consistent with those objectives.

Experience Required:

5+ years quality control experience preferred.

Knowledge/Skills Required:

A thorough understanding of inspection techniques as well as considerable judgment and initiative are required in resolving problems and making recommendations as to the methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

Education Required:

BSIE or BSBA with emphasis in Quality Management.

Physical Demands:

Supplier Quality Engineers normally sit or stand while performing their duties; they may be required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and they must, of course, walk from place to place, but they are involved in these activities less than one third of the time. They spend about that same percentage of time reaching in order to finger, handle or feel parts. On occasion they might be required to lift up to 50 pounds, but again that would occur less than one third of the time. Communication is a major part of the job; they spend more than two thirds of their time listening and speaking. Good close and color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus is required more than two thirds of the time; distance and peripheral vision should be adequate but is less often required.

Work Environment:

The normal working environment is quiet; Supplier Quality Engineers are exposed to very loud noise when they visit supplier sites (less than one third of the time). The must work in high, precarious places, near moving mechanical parts, at risk of electrical shock and/or are exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals or fumes or airborne particles less than one third of the time. There is no exposure to explosives, radiation or vibration, extreme temperatures, dampness or humidity, or outdoor weather.
