SUMMARY
The Transport Network Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, implementation, and maintenance of VTXC’s transport network infrastructure. This includes fiber backbone systems, DWDM/OTN platforms, and layer 2/3 routing gear. This includes direct support for the company’s data center facilities, ensuring that both internal and customer-facing infrastructure is robust, redundant, and high performing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Design and deploy long haul and metro transport systems using DWDM, OTN, and IP/MPLS technologies.
- Engineer and implement fiber-based routes between central offices, data centers, and interconnect points.
- Configure and maintain Nokia, Juniper and Cisco platforms.
- Lead migrations and turn-ups of 10G, 100G, and 400G transport services.
- Perform optical testing (OTDR, light levels), validate fiber paths, and troubleshoot transport circuits.
- Maintain logical and physical documentation (Visio, Excel).
- Assist NOC with network configuration/reconfiguration as necessary.
- Train Level 1 and Level 2 staff in the technological and operational aspects of new implementations.
- Support and manage core network gear housed in VTXC and partner data centers.
- Coordinate and install equipment racks, patch panels, PDU’s and structured cabling.
- Provision fiber cross-connects, power drops, and customer colocation interfaces.
- Assist with Smart Hands request including equipment reboots, cabling, and basic troubleshooting.
- Ensure up time by supporting redundancy designs and coordinating preventive maintenance.
- Monitor and respond to alerts from power systems, generators, and fire suppression units.
- Will be required to perform "stand-by" duty and be "on-call" as part of rotation
- Maintain compliance to all relevant OSHA, safety or departmental specific standards as directed by supervisor.
- Other duties may be assigned.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have a valid Driver’s License and insurable record.
Must pass pre-employment screen, physical and background checks.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- At least 3-4 years performing new installations, moves, adds, and changes for voice, transport, video and data networks in local and remote locations.
- At least 3-4 years of network management experience in installing, customizing and maintaining a variety of NMS tools.
- Able to manage complex network projects with minimal supervision.
- Proficient in networking technologies-Voice (TDM and VoIP), Data, ATM, Frame Relay, Ethernet, routers, switches, SONET, DWDM and multiplexers.
- Possesses expertise with network functions, protocols and standards.
- Proficient in the use of Windows Operating Systems and workable in UNIX/LINUX. Knowledge of scripting is very helpful, HTML /I A VA, shell, and Perl.
- Knowledge of DC power/batteries, TCP/IP, IP Video and VoIP, a plus.
- Able to gather and provide technical requirements, build criteria and evaluate software and hardware.
- Self-managing and self-starter, believing in providing high quality of service.
- Possesses good communication and intel personal skills. Has contact with Network Technicians (COE, NOC), and Network/NOC Supervisors.
- Ability to work non-standard hours (nights, weekends, holidays) due to service outages and scheduled maintenances
