The Team
The Data Management Office: Identifies the Bank's data needs and aligns data investments with business strategy. Partners with stakeholders to apply data governance best practices to activities with tangible business value Rapidly & securely provisions the right data to the right audience at the right time Delivers a high-touch customer service experience which meets the needs and exceeds the expectations of our customers. The Lead Database Engineer is responsible for: Modernizing data platforms and implementing frameworks to improve standards for on-premises and cloud-hosted relational and non-relational databases. Designing strategies for optimized efficient, reliable, and cost-effective cloud-native data platforms. Performing root cause analyses of database infrastructure or platform-related issues, identifying appropriate resolutions, and partnering with stakeholders to implement solutions. Key outcomes Review, recommend, and implement solutions for optimizing database operations, including but not limited to database replication, storage, and performance Monitor and optimize the Bank's RDS instances for cost-effectiveness and compliance with Bank standards. Proactively monitor and perform frequent analysis of the Bank's cloud data platforms for capacity planning, anticipate future problem areas, and plan for appropriate sizing. Provide expert insights while troubleshooting application data platform issues and advise on solution options and their trade-offs. Proactively review and analyze data access patterns and advise on best combination of indexes, constraints, foreign keys, and queries. Resolve existing technical debt and eliminate or minimize the growth of new technical debt related to data platforms. Work closely with Database Administrators to ensure the availability, stability, and security of the Bank's database infrastructure. Collaborate with application development teams and Database Administrators to ensure alignment to Enterprise Architecture (EA) and Data Architecture (DA) standards for database design, configuration, replication, and use. Stay up to date with industry trends and emerging technologies in cloud data platforms and recommend relevant changes to the Bank's data platforms. Take proactive ownership of operational issues related to data platforms, perform root cause analysis to get a resolution, and provide updates to management. Provide thought leadership in identifying reusable, flexible, and scalable database solutions with zero downtime reliability. Provide training on supported capabilities. Collaborate with other Data Management Office staff as needed to advance the maturity of the Bank's overall data management. Identify existing and avoid building new roadblocks to delivering business value in a timely manner. Required Experience 5+ years of experience working as a database engineer with various cloud-hosted and on-premises relational & non-relational database technologies & architectures. 3+ years of hands-on experience in designing and maintaining cloud database solutions; optimization and configuration of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Relational Database Services (RDS) is preferred. 3+ years of experience with optimizing storage, retrieval, tuning, and replication of large and complex data sets. Demonstrable experience in design and development of: Information management/data architectures Multi-tier data layers and frameworks Data Integration methods for transactional systems Cloud storage solutions. Strong interpersonal skills including collaboration, critical thinking, analytical mindset, stakeholder and relationship management. Technical Skills : Proficiency in setup, configuration, and scaling of relational & non-relational databases in the Cloud Expertise in relational database management systems (RDBMS) such as Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and Oracle Expert troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for diagnosing complex issues with cloud-hosted databases Expertise in database server specification, performance monitoring, tuning, analysis, and optimization Expertise in database disaster recovery, including advanced use of AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) Strong SQL query optimization skills for improving query performance. Strong understanding of database design structures, theories, principles, and practices. Expertise in data privacy, encryption, and relevant data protection capabilities. Sound knowledge of best practices in database engineering including: Data storage techniques - hot/cold; column-oriented vs row-oriented Database security mechanisms - data masking, encryption, role-based access controls Data retrieval methods for optimized query performance Trade-offs between horizontal vs vertical scaling of databases Functional Skills: Ability to think at and switch between multiple levels (e.g., conceptual vs. logical vs. physical data models, strategic vs. tactical planning) Good understanding of data management functions as per the Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBOK) and its application to design, development, and implementation of operational data solutions Working knowledge of project management techniques and/or System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodologies Education/Certifications Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related discipline. Master's degree preferred. Professional experience will be considered in lieu of education. Certifications in AWS RDS/DMS, data engineering, or database technologies are not required but are a plus. AWS Database Specialty certification preferred.
Salary Range - $150,000 - $165,000
