Mechanical Engineer – Job Description

Location: San Bruno, CA | Full-time | Minimum 3 Days Onsite

Mission

The mission for this Mechanical Engineer position is to play a key role on Empo Health’s engineering team. Specifically, you will help further engineer our first product, a diagnostic scanner for diabetics, by helping us redesign from a pilot-scale product to a scalable product design, while also contributing design improvements and thinking into our next generation of products. This is a mid-level role that is hands-on and embedded in a small, agile hardware team. You’ll work closely with cross-functional partners and contribute directly to both short-term updates and long-term design strategy.

Outcomes (Next 12 Months)
  • Contribute directly to the redesign from pilot production (~10 units/week) to scalable low-volume production (~1,000 units/quarter) of our current generation product.

  • Contribute to mechanical rework strategies based on field feedback and internal testing.

  • Develop and release robust mechanical designs in CAD with appropriate documentation and properly toleranced drawings.

  • Improve production fixturing and test processes through design and documentation updates.

  • Design components and assemblies suited for high-volume production methods, including injection-molded plastics, sheet metal, and machined parts.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to originate and execute verification and validation test plans.

  • Travel as needed to contract manufacturer sites to support builds and design transfers.

  • Work closely with the engineering team to influence product quality, reliability, and manufacturability.

  • Help establish a culture of engineering excellence as we grow.

Role-Specific Required Competencies
  • A mid-level mechanical engineer with 4–6 years of relevant experience.

  • Excellent proficiency in 3D CAD part design, assembly design and management, master modeling, and the production of engineering drawings.

  • Experienced in high-volume production design, especially injection-molded plastics, sheet metal, and machined part design.

  • Familiarity with mechatronic systems, including motor-driven mechanisms and sensor integration.

  • Experience performing tolerance analysis and solving tight, critical tolerance loops.

  • Able to release production-ready drawings with classic and GD&T tolerancing applied as necessary.

  • Able and willing to get hands-on with the assembly and testing of new designs.

  • Comfortable with a variety of physical prototyping tools and methods

  • Thoughtful and creative in developing functional and reliability test strategies.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and wearing multiple hats.

  • Available to work onsite in San Bruno at least 3 days/week and travel occasionally to Fremont, CA.

Additional Desired Experience
  • Specific experience with OnShape CAD

  • Experience developing or improving test protocols and fixtures

  • Experience with Design of Experiments for hardware validation

  • Exposure to/Experience with medical device Quality Management Systems (ISO 13485, FDA QSR, IEC 60601)

  • Experience with PLM tools, ideally Duro

  • Basic scripting or automation experience for test automation (Python and/or PLC programming preferred)

  • Experience supporting sustaining engineering, ECOs, and field-driven design changes.

  • Experience originating and designing fixtures to aid in the assembly, calibration, and/or testing of hardware products

In this role, you will:
  • Execute design updates focused on scaling production, improving reliability, and manufacturability.

  • Develop and release mechanical designs and documentation using Onshape

  • Apply DFM/DFA and GD&T principles across injection-molded, sheet metal, and machined components.

  • Originate and execute design verification and validation test plans, or work closely with others to support them.

  • Assist with sustaining engineering tasks such as field failure investigations, root cause analysis, ECOs, and product documentation updates.

  • Interface with our contract manufacturer, including occasional onsite support for builds and issue resolution.

  • Be a core member of a small team shaping both current and next-generation hardware.
